New Arrangement of Ginastera Duo for Flute and Clarinet
Ginastera Duo

King of Prussia, PA – Theodore Presser Company announces the release of the first arrangement of Alberto Ginastera's Duo for Flute and Oboe (1945). Familiar and standard repertoire for most flute and oboe duos, its three movements (Sonata, Pastorale, Fuga) immediately found a welcoming audience in the United States, including Virgil Thomson, who proclaimed, "This is the kind of music which makes one believe and have confidence in the New World." In his new arrangement of the Duo for Flute and Clarinet in A (154-40017 - score - $12.99), editor Daniel Dorff retains the original flute part, while transposing the oboe to clarinet in A with an ear for idiomatic accuracy.

Alberto Ginastera (1916 - 1983) is undeniably one of the most important classical composers to come out of Latin America. As a young man, he visited the United States with an opportunity to study with Aaron Copeland, and the famous Duo was written at about this time. His body of work covers the complete range of concert music, from solo piano (including the Danzas Argentinas) to orchestra. The fourth movement of his first Piano Concerto was adapted and recorded by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer on their album Brain Salad Surgery, and later used as the theme to a cult TV program Creature Double Feature.

Daniel Dorff was born in New Rochelle, NY; acclaim came early with First Prize in the Aspen Music Festivals annual composers competition at age 18 for his Fantasy, Scherzo, and Nocturne for saxophone quartet. Dorff received degrees in composition from Cornell and University of Pennsylvania; teachers included George Crumb, George Rochberg, Karel Husa, Henry Brant, Ralph Shapey, Elie Siegmeister, and Richard Wernick. He studied saxophone with Sigurd Rascher. In 1996, Dorff was named Composer-In-Residence for Symphony in C (formerly Haddonfield Symphony), in which he played bass clarinet from 1980 through 2002. Dorffs works have been performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Aspen Music Festival, Spoleto Festival, and Eastman Wind Ensemble, and many others.
