Nietzsche Piano Works
Selected Works for Piano
(Piano Solo and Piano, Four Hands)

By Friedrich Nietzsche
Compiled and Edited by Nicholas Hopkins

Carl Fischer Music
PL1054 - Score - $24.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Music was always an important aspect of Friedrich Nietzsches life. At the age of seventeen, Nietzsche obtained the vocal score of Richard Wagners music drama “Tristan und Isolde” and was immediately mesmerized by the music. Seven years later, he met Wagner for the first time, and an intimate and mutually inspiring relationship developed that would influence and define every aspect of his personal and professional life from that point. This collection, edited and compiled by Nicholas Hopkins, PhD in Music Theory and Composition, features 19 pieces for piano solo and piano four hands that Nietzsche composed between the years 1857 and 1874. The pieces offer a unique glimpse of a highly influential philosopher whose musical achievements have remained largely overlooked, even unknown. Also included is a scholarly essay by Hopkins that discusses Nietzsches unique way of reconciling the two very different disciplines of philosophy and music, and analyzes his development as a composer.

Howard Harold Hanson’s Symphonic Rhapsody for Piano, composed during the summer of 1919, is his largest single-movement solo piano work. In a letter in July of 1919 to College of the Pacific president, Tully C. Knoles, Hanson wrote, “It is an attempt to put the emotional contents of an entire four movement Sonata into one movement of considerable length.” This piece reveals many pianistic features which demonstrate the technical and expressive gifts of the composer as pianist.

Springs
By Paul Lansky
Percussion Quartet

Carl Fischer Music
DRM146 – Score and Parts – $52.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Watch Springs on YouTubeEach of four percussionists uses two drums and a set of three chosen percussive “instruments” - woods for one, metals for another, glass for the third, and plates or flowerpots for the fourth. The instruments should be picked for “relatively harmonious cacophony.” Repeated rhythmic passages grow in intensity before springing into new patterns, and this is itself repeated throughout. Springs is a fascinating and mesmerizing percussion concert work, commissioned by Chamber Music America for Sō Percussion. Watch their performance on YouTube.
