Restless was written for the Red Stick Quartet in 2001 and has been featured at the Midwest Band Clinic. A challenge for better quartets from high school to professional level, Restless is a wonderful piece to open or close a program. "The outer sections are filled with a jazz-influenced rhythmic and harmonic language, while the middle section offers great lyricism. This piece features all four members equally." (Red Stick Quartet) For advanced performers. Dur.: c.4' |

For the Oasis Quartet, Lias composed a five-minute exploration of the saxophone quartet, Scallywag. A little bit raucous at the beginning, Scallywag becomes a quietly rhythmic interplay building up to flying fingers of tight ensemble playing and an extension of the opening waggish passages. For advanced performers. |

Abstract Mosaics
Brass Quintet
(Two C Trumpets, Horn in F, Trombone, Tuba[or Bass Trombone])
Theodore Presser Company
114-41380 – Score – $35.00
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Abstract Mosaics was inspired by the mosaic artwork of Sonia King. By nature, mosaics are synergistic – many small pieces structured together to make an artistic whole. Needham’s work vividly captures this construction from small elements. Each of the work’s four sections highlights a particular sonic quality, and each of the instruments, or “pieces” of the quintet, works in concert with one another creating the musical landscape, instead of the traditional model of one voice carrying the main melodic content. Abstract Mosaics was commissioned by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Faculty Brass Quintet in celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary. |
Carter Pann

Pann’s high-spirited and effervescent Duo was composed for the husband-wife Wozniak Duo – Lois Hicks-Wozniak saxophone and Matt Wozniak bass trombone. Movement I is titled “Lyrical Lois,” beginning with the tempo heading With sweet serenity, which gives way to a second theme marked With an innocence. Movement II is “Chopper’s Rag,” a phantasmagoric ragtime dance letting out all the stops. The publication provides two performance scores. |

Differences is comprised of five short movements, very much like a Baroque suite – however, the five individual pieces are radically different from each other in style and content. Strand is a kind of pop tune where the viola has the vocal line, although the rhythms are a bit more complex, sometimes jarring. Air takes its language from the Baroque, and the title refers to the “canto” style of long legato vocal lines over a slow and undulating accompaniment. Country Dance is a peasant tune whose middle section is very pastoral. Blues is a small chance for the performers to show a little soul. Song, like Strand, is a pop tune, though a bit more direct than the opening movement. Differences is also available for Cello and Piano. |

Leshnoff considers two chapters of an almost 2,000-year-old text that details the approach to the presence of the Divine. The first describes the fear and trepidation before ultimately experiencing the absolute joy of G-d's presence. The vocal lines are in Eastern and then Western European cantorial styles, as blended with Leshnoff's 21st century voice. HaMelekh is available in both High Voice and Baritone Voice editions. A performance by baritone Matthew Austerklein is available on YouTube. |

In 1990, Ewazen wrote his Three Lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay for soprano Jody DallArmi with piano accompaniment. About ten years later, Ewazen created a version for trumpet and piano, and also for trumpet and marimba. Answering a commission by Cantabile Chamber Chorale in celebration of their 20th anniversary season, Ewazen set the first poem, God's World, for mixed chorus and piano. The text celebrates the wonder and beauty of our world, but with an understanding of the fleeting temporal passing inherent in each view. Ewazen's lush melodic lines are crafted to match. |

Come Dance and Sing Around the Ring
Unison Chorus, SATB Chorus, with Piano or a capella
Maurice River Press
392-01213 – Octavo – $2.25
See a page (JPG)
|
Philip Dietterich, Minister of Music at the First United Methodist Church of Westfield, NJ conducted a 1970 performance of the newly discovered Foundling Hospital version of Handel's Messiah to a sold-out audience. Over the ensuing 10 year period, he would establish an elite concert choir, the Oratorio Singers, which he conducted until his retirement in 1994. Along the way, he has penned a number of sacred works for chorus, including his best-selling “Ye Followers of the Lamb” (Hope Publishing Company). Maurice River Press proudly presents four more choral works by Dietterich.
A 19th century Shaker song is set in a skipping 6/8 setting. The opening verse is sung in unison voices, after which the SATB chorus exhorts us to celebrate life, love, and communion. Come Dance and Sing may be performed with or without piano accompaniment. Dur.: 2'

Joyful Saints of God
A Shaker Heavenly March
SAB Chorus and Handbells
Maurice River Press
392-01215 – Octavo – $2.25
See a page (JPG)
|
Joyful Saints of God is an earnest song of praise taken from a Shaker Heavenly March, built around the verse “Around the throne of God we spy beams of endless glory. We'll bow our faces and we'll cry, holy, holy, holy.” Dietterich suggests that the chorus should march while singing, as the Shakers may have done. |

Using a Shaker text, Dietterich infuses the cold blast of winds throughout his choral setting for unaccompanied choir. The soprano lines (with frequent divisi) soar above the other supporting voices, adding an airy effect. Piano part is included for rehearsals. |

Frederic Hand
Chorale
Guitar Quartet
Handwerks Music
494-03114 – Score and Parts – $19.95
See a page (JPG)
|
Chorale was originally written for guitar orchestra, and is here reduced to quartet with some reworking of the material. At one point, Hand feels that this new reconstitution may be overly challenging for some, so he includes the original version of one section as an appendix, which can be used instead of the new version. About Chorale, Hand writes, “Based on a simple theme of three notes ascending in whole steps, Chorale is inspired by the renaissance and baroque choral music that I listened to in my youth (especially Bach Chorales). Although I’ve integrated some of my favorite jazz harmonies and rhythms into the fabric of the music, I feel that at it’s core, it very much has an early music sensibility.” |

The complete series of eight trios tells the story of two young lovers in Argentina and can be performed as a whole. Each trio stands alone well, however, and each is about four minutes in length.
As a young composer, Robert Martin was captured by the abstract works of Arshile Gorky and considered the painter's process of creation similar to his own, “a feeling of playful spontaneity contrasted against a sense of organized inevitability.”
In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia.
Nighttime “Tu Ne Cede Malis, Sed Contra Audentior Ito”
Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano
Theodore Presser Company
144-40515 – Complete Set – $70.99
144-40515S – Score – $34.99
144-40515M – Set of Parts – $46.99

“One role of music is to evoke. Therefore, Nighttime is a nocturne, a night piece suggestive of flickering shadows, perhaps created by firelight. It is a recurrent setting in human existence. The music opens with the scene of twilight calm, gently disturbed with the slight uncertainty about what is around us, what we cannot see. Later, the clarinet takes on a solo role, and the notes bleed like careless paint into the other instruments that quietly sustain them. Next, the flute takes over the role of solo. The piece ends with a repeated cadence of morning light.” (From the performance notes.)
Enigma “The Question Is Complex, and Life Is Short”
Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano
Theodore Presser Company
144-40516 – Complete Set – $60.99
144-40516S – Score – $32.99
144-40516M – Set of Parts – $38.99
See sample pages (PDF)
“As the title suggests, the music is in a state of perpetual questioning using a variety of approaches. For example, Enigma opens using ostinati (plural of ostinato) that do not match in length, like a staircase with each step a different height. Additionally, the music has sudden starts and stops, again unexplained. There are dramatic and powerful explosive passages that are interrupted. The technique, used to create this feeling of a perplexed music world where things seem often not to make sense and to be left unresolved, is called in poetry and literature, anticlimax. In Enigma, the music suggests one direction; then refuses to continue, striking out in another direction. Artists use approaches such as this to force themselves into creative circumstances that they otherwise might not have discovered.” (From the performance notes.)
Nostalgia “…for The Evanescence Of All Things”
Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano
Theodore Presser Company
144-40517 – Complete Set – $52.99
144-40517S – Score – $19.99
144-40517M – Set of Parts – $42.99
See sample pages (PDF)
“There are passages in Nostalgia that build using two layers, a louder foreground and a quieter background. Both of these layers are independent of specific instruments, in other words, the various instruments jump in to play a role in either layer, then jump to the other layer. It is as if the ensemble has doubled. The technical musical term for multiple instruments interweaving to produce a single thread or idea is called Klangfarbenmelodie (tone-color-melody). Because there are two layers (louder and softer), both using this technique, Nostalgia is a unique example of 'double Klangfarbenmelodie.' The piece ends with a series of intense rhythmic pulsations and several apocalyptic fanfares.” (From the performance notes.)

In a dynamic trombone event, slowly building tension and blaring cascades in arpeggiated passages appear throughout Zyman's exploration of the particular sonics of the trombone ensemble. Recurring themes and rhythms keep Coming and Going throughout. For advanced performers. Dur.: 10'
