King of Prussia, PA – Theodore Presser Company announces the publication of Carter Pann's Five Serious Pieces for piano (110-41818 – Score – $16.99).
In 2011, Pann proposed a major piano project to his friend, the excellent pianist Joel Hastings, to be comprised of 12 pieces, composed especially to take advantage of Hasting's prodigious talents. The result was The Piano's 12 Sides, a 55 minute cycle in which each of the 12 pieces is also dedicated to a different pianist friend of Pann's. Hastings performed and recorded the cycle on the Naxos label in 2014. Recently, Pann again began a collaboration with Hastings, with an eye toward an even larger project - perhaps 18 pieces. Hastings, however, suffered a fatal heart attack and Pann decided to end the project with the five pieces that had been finalized.
The Five Serious Pieces, as described by Pann, are “very different character pieces…at times introspective, charming, humorous, and brutal.” The common element, he explains, is that all were composed for a pianist with “an uncommon level of technical fluency.” Advanced pianists will be challenged by descriptive pieces This Black Cat, Smart Car, Claude Philipp Emanuel Saint - Brahms, Rocket, and Wagner's Oracle, all scripted by a composer who himself is an accomplished pianist.
Five Serious Pieces is available now through Theodore Presser Company or your favorite music retailer.
