For Immediate Release March 24, 2017
Josephine (the Singer) - Edition for Solo Viola
Bresnick Josephine the Singer

New York, NY – Carl Fischer Music announces the release of Josephine (the Singer) (B3462 – Score – $12.99) composed by Martin Bresnick and edited by Anne Lanzilotti.

Originally commissioned by the International Max Rostal competition in Berlin for solo violin, Martin Bresnicks Josephine (the Singer) is now also available for solo viola. The piece takes its title from Franz Kafkas last published story, Josephine the Singer or the Mouse Folk, and is an extended passacaglia on a subject derived from his earlier work, Songs of the Mouse People. Violist, composer, and educator Anne Lanzilotti has edited this version for viola to add this beautifully somber work to the instruments repertoire.

Josephine (the Singer) is available now through Carl Fischer Music, or your favorite music retailer.

Martin Bresnick is a world renowned composer and pedagogue and is currently professor of Composition and Coordinator of the Composition Department at the Yale School of Music. Bresnicks compositions cover a wide range of instrumentation from chamber music of all types to symphonic works and computer music. His orchestral music has been performed by the National Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and American Composers Orchestra, to name only a few. His chamber music has been performed in concert by The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Sonor, Da Capo Chamber Players, Speculum Musicae, Bang on a Can All Stars, and many more equally renowned international ensembles. See our Composer Page for more information.

A fierce advocate of contemporary music, Anne Lanzilotti has distinguished herself premiering works and collaborating with composers of her generation. Lanzilotti has performed orchestrally as a fellowship violist in the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, co-principal violist of the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas, and has also performed under Pierre Boulez as a member of the Lucerne Festival Academy. Currently on the faculty at NYU Steinhardt, she maintains a studio of undergraduate and graduate students, coaches chamber music from Mozart to Shaw, and teaches a two-semester course on extended techniques for strings that she developed.
