New York, NY – Carl Fischer Music announces the release of the Battle Hymn of the Republic Critical Edition for Orchestra (C120 – Complete Set – $85.00; C120S – Full Score – $12.00) arranged by Peter J. Wilhousky and edited by Justin P. Tokke.
Made popular by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Grammy winning performance in 1959, Peter Wilhousky’s famous arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic has remained a staple to this day. Thanks to widespread popularity, six different versions for band, orchestra, and various choral voicings were produced, allowing this quintessential symbol of American patriotism to be performed throughout the nation by any combination of ensemble. Though these versions have always been compatible with one another, never before have they blended so effortlessly thanks to editor Justin P. Tokke’s careful revisions.
In creating this Critical Edition for Orchestra, careful attention has been paid to Wilhousky’s original stylistic choices while also addressing misprints. The arrangement now features a new full score, re-engraved parts, and modern necessities including measure numbers and rehearsal marks that match the band version (J763), also available from Carl Fischer Music, to ensure complete ensemble compatibility in mass performance. This exciting edition hopes to inspire future collaboration and new performance opportunities.
Other ensemble arrangements include:
J763 – Concert Band
CM4743 – SSATTBB
CM9356 – SAB
CM6777 – SSA
CM6778 – TTB
Battle Hymn of the Republic is available now through Carl Fischer Music, or your favorite music retailer.
Peter Wilhousky was an ethnic-Ukranian born in New Jersey in 1902. He showed great promise for music at a young age and was trained, and later taught, at Juilliard. He worked as an orchestrator for Arturo Toscanini’s NBC Symphony and was director of choral music in the New York City Public Schools. Between his choral conducting, teaching, and arranging, he earned a reputation as one of the forefathers of American choral pedagogy. Many of his arrangements, such as this one, are still popular today.
Composer, engraver, and software developer, Justin P. Tokke has been fascinated with music and composition since learning piano at an early age. After many years of trombone study, attending Mannes College, and graduating from Eastern University with a degree in composition, Tokke put his expert Sibelius skills to use as a freelance engraver in New York City. Now serving as Technical Lead for Carl Fischer Music, he has engraved and edited a multitude of manuscripts and also oversees the development of the company’s websites and web apps. Tokke continues to compose in his free time and regularly performs as an organist and vocalist in choirs and churches throughout New York City.
