For Immediate Release June 13, 2017
Battle Hymn of the Republic Critical Edition for Band
Battle Hymn of the Republic

New York, NY – Carl Fischer Music announces the release of the Battle Hymn of the Republic Critical Edition for Band (J763 Complete Set $95.00; J763F Full Score $14.00) arranged by Justin P. Tokke, based on Peter J. Wilhouskys orchestral version.

Made popular by the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs Grammy winning performance in 1959, Peter Wilhouskys famous arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic has remained a staple to this day. In this Critical Edition for Band by Justin P. Tokke, a new arrangement has been crafted based on Wilhouskys original orchestral scoring. To enhance playability, generous cross-cuing and doubling of the choral parts have been applied in cases where the band version is played without voices. This new arrangement ensures complete compatibility with both the choral and orchestral versions, with new measure numbers and rehearsal marks, and comes complete with a full score and parts produced with modern engraving standards. This exciting edition is ready to continue Wilhouskys legacy and hopes to inspire future collaboration and new performance opportunities.

Battle Hymn of the Republic in Carl Fischer Music editions has always been performable by diverse ensembles, separately and together. Tokke's arrangement makes this much easier. The following other ensemble arrangements are also available:

C120  –  Full Orchestra
CM4743  –  SSATTBB
CM9356  –  SAB
CM6777  –  SSA
CM6778  –  TTB

Battle Hymn of the Republic is available now through Carl Fischer Music, or your favorite music retailer.

Peter Wilhousky was an ethnic-Ukrainian born in New Jersey in 1902. He showed great promise for music at a young age and was trained, and later taught, at Juilliard. He worked as an orchestrator for Arturo Toscaninis NBC Symphony and was director of choral music in the New York City Public Schools. Between his choral conducting, teaching, and arranging, he earned a reputation as one of the forefathers of American choral pedagogy. Many of his arrangements, such as this one, are still popular today.

Composer, engraver, and software developer, Justin P. Tokke has been fascinated with music and composition since learning piano at an early age. After many years of trombone study, attending Mannes College, and graduating from Eastern University with a degree in composition, Tokke put his expert Sibelius skills to use as a freelance engraver in New York City. Now serving as Technical Lead for Carl Fischer Music, he has engraved and edited a multitude of manuscripts and also oversees the development of the companys websites and web apps. Tokke continues to compose in his free time and regularly performs as an organist and vocalist in choirs and churches throughout New York City.
