SOS Simplifying Our Sight Reading
by Laura Farnell and Mary Jane Phillips

SOS Simplifying Our Sight ReadingNew York, NY — BriLee Music announces the release of SOS - Simplifying Our Sight Reading, a complete resource for teaching beginning sight-readers. Laura Farnell and Mary Jane Phillips share their acclaimed system to simplify sight-reading, which includes the SOS Director/Student Resource (BLB009 - $9.99), a free downloadable bass clef version of the SOS Director/Student Resource, and supplemental SOS flashcards (Treble - BLB010 - $19.99, Bass - BLB011 - $19.99) and SOS Rhythm Reader (BL836 - $1.95) for classroom use.

The SOS series teaches sight-reading by utilizing separation of elements and repetition of skills to get singers comfortable combining sight and sound. The techniques are presented in a progression of skills, including separation of rhythm and pitch without notation, reproduction of tonal patterns using notation, reproduction of rhythm patterns using notation, reading rhythm and tonal patterns in unison melodies, and reading rhythm and tonal patterns in two and three part melodies.

Dr. Judy Bowers, Professor of Choral Music Education at Florida State University, says that SOS is "designed so that many novice singers can experience choral music," and notes that "this book promises to be invaluable."

Laura Farnell is a choral composer, clinician, accompanist, and adjudicator who taught Texas public school choral music for ten years at the elementary and middle school levels. She was honored by her schools with Teacher of the Year awards in 2000 and 2003, and in 2004 she received an Excellence in Education Award as her districts outstanding junior high teacher of the year. Laura presently serves as an invited clinician for district, region, and state honor choirs across the country and presents choral workshops at the district and state levels.

Mary Jane Phillips is in her 25th year of teaching middle school choral music in Texas. She currently teaches at Wayside Middle School in Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD in the northwest suburbs of Fort Worth. Ms. Phillips is a frequent adjudicator and clinician and has written articles pertaining to many facets of middle school choral music for Texas Sings!, ChorTeach, and the Choral Journal. She has presented workshops on the male and female adolescent changing voice, sight reading games, and sight reading pedagogy in Texas, California, Oklahoma, Connecticut and Alabama.
