Composed for Jasmine Choi’s premiere on the 2018 National Flute Association concerto gala, Dorff’s Concertino is a 10-minute showpiece full of flash and theatricality, elegantly balanced with beauty and lyricism. The work is fully suitable for flute and piano recitals, while the orchestral version is easy to program, even when rehearsal time is limited. For advanced flutists. Dur.: 10' |

Happy 150th, Canada! Judy Diez d'Aux commissioned Peter Senchuk for a new feature work for Les flûtistes de Montréal. Senchuk built his new flute ensemble work around two Canadian “classics,” the national anthem O Canada and the familiar The Maple Leaf Forever (written at the time of Confederation). The two are shaped and molded into a rousing Canadian Celebration of pride and distinction. Dur.: 6' |

Johann Sebastian Bach
Brandenburg Concerto No. 3
Arranged by Melanie Thorne
Clarinet Octet
Sempre Music
SM-C141FF – Score and Parts – $35.00
See a page (JPG)
|
The six Brandenburg Concertos are among the most familiar of Bach's output, but Bach never heard them performed. In fact, the score wouldn't be published until the Bach Centenary, and even then it took the invention of the phonograph to bring them to widespread public appreciation. Among the six, the third is a wondrous experience for performers and audience, with its fascinating use of instrumental groupings, passages being shared back and forth. Thorne has taken the original string instrumentation and created a faithful arrangement for eight clarinets. The set includes all parts, including two alternates. |
Jonathan Leshnoff
Four Dances
Arranged by Christopher Cicconi
Saxophone Quartet
Leshnoff Publishing
494-03141 – Score and Parts – $44.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Towson University Director of Bands and Orchestras Cicconi is much in demand as guest conductor and clinician, in addition to preparing future music educators for their own careers. Cicconi last year arranged Leshnoff's orchestra work Rush for concert band (495-00012), giving the premiere with his own Towson University Symphonic Band. Four Dances ( Waltz, Pavane, Chas Tanz, and Furlana) was composed in 2014 as a string quartet, has been transcribed for chamber orchestra, and is now made available as saxophone quartet by Cicconi. ( Baltimore Chamber Orchestra leads off its new season with a performance of Four Dances in the chamber orchestra transcription, September 30.) |
Johann Sebastian Bach

|
Along with her arrangement for clarinets (SM-C141FF), Thorne has also arranged the famous Brandenburg Concert No. 3 for eight saxophones (SSAATTBB). Certainly, the performance requires discipline, coordination, and stamina, but the results are joy and Bachian bliss. |

Universal Edition
UE037222 – Score and CD – $21.50

|
Following his jazz studies for the flute, Dehnhard now brings a set of 10 jazz tunes to the alto recorder. Using chord progressions from familiar jazz tunes, Dehnhard introduces articulation, straight eighths versus swinging eighths, ornamentation, and more. An included audio CD features listening recordings by a jazz trio in various tempi, along with a play-along track without the solo. The perfect introduction to jazz for recorder students in 3rd to 6th years of study. |
Alexandre Borodin
Symphony in B minor, 1st Movement
Arranged by Melanie Thorne
Large Wind Ensemble

Borodin's Second Symphony was years in the making, work often interrupted by calls for new commissions and Borodin's other fascinations with the sciences. Ultimately, the Symphony in B Minor would be hailed as his finest work, and Liszt himself would urge Borodin to not change a single note, claiming that it was perfection as it was. Arranging this orchestral symphony for a large woodwind ensemble must have been a challenge for Melanie Thorne, but the result is a solid transcription ("with no strings attached"). College-level or better high school wind ensembles can build a program around this impressive entry. |
Edvard Grieg
Four Movements from the Holberg Suite
Arranged by Melanie Thorne
Woodwind Octet (2Ob., 2Cl., 2Hn., 2 Bsn.)
Sempre Music
SM-MW108FF – Score and Parts – $35.00
See a page (JPG)
|
The Holberg Suite, or more properly “From Holberg's Time,” was Grieg's nod to the 200th anniversary of the birth of playwright Ludvig Holberg. Grieg captured several dance forms from Holberg's era in what was originally a piano solo setting. Grieg would later himself transcribe the work for string orchestra. And now, Melanie Thorne has brought the Holberg to a wind octet arrangement. Following the opening Praeludium, the four movements are Sarabande, Gavotte, Musette, and Rigaudon. |

The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a femme fatale), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, Noir Vignettes consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. Also available for doublebass and piano (114-41811, $19.99) at normal discount. Dur.: 13' |

A fascination with polycultural synergy between diverse literary texts drives the inspiration for much of Mohammed Fairouz’s prodigious creative output, including instrumental music as well as vocal. In his profound and extensive essay preceding the score, Fairouz sheds light on how Edgar Allen Poe’s “Israfel” relates to the prophets and prophesies of the Quran, Old Testament, and New Testament. The eight-movement quartet may be heard as a dramatic gallery of portraits and of story-telling, flourishing in a post-traditional language that is at once vernacular and spiritual, Middle Eastern and Western. The complete set of score and parts is included in this publication. Dur.: 25' |

Composing for Boston Music Viva on a Fromm Foundation grant, Melinda Wagner drew inspiration from an astounding video of an industrious little pufferfish and his sand artistry. Working 24 hours a day, he carves out a beautiful medallion of swirls and ridges, in the hope of attracting a sweetheart. Wagner has written, “I was so moved by the careful preparation, determination, patience, and artistry of this little fish, who has no guarantees of finding true love. The phenomenon reminded me very much of the act of composing – of creating something out of nothing, with few guarantees.” Dur.:14' |

Vienna Urtext
UT050432 – Score – $13.95

|
“The most monumental of Beethoven's piano sonatas.” Editor Jochen Reutter describes the lengths to which his research has gone in trying to produce a critical and definitive edition of this great Beethoven work. No manuscript or autograph is known to exist, so an amazing bit of detective work included a wealth of correspondence with editors, publishers, engravers, etc. The resulting edition is handsomely printed in a critical edition which is perfect for practical performance. |

Stacy Garrop began hiking in northern Colorados Rocky Mountain National Park in her early 20s. From the start, she was drawn to a jagged stretch of rock formations linking Longs Peak to Pagoda Mountain, at over 13,000 feet. These formations are called the “Keyboard of the Winds,” as their thin, spindly peaks suggest splintered keys of an old, broken piano. Inspired by one particular journey the composer took through the Keyboard of the Winds en route to Pagodas summit, this work is a tribute to the Keyboard of the Winds. Its fast, whirling gestures depict swirling clouds above, and the musical high points represent a hiker reaching the peak of Pagoda Mountain. These sections are set in contrast with quiet, introspective material embodying the hiker quietly surveying the grandeur and beauty of the valley below, as well as the soaring pinnacle of Longs Peak overhead. Dur.: 8'30" |
Gerald Levinson
Chorale for Nanine, with Birds
(Hommage à Messiaen)
Piano Solo
Theodore Presser Company
140-40121 – Score – $7.50
See a page (JPG)
|
This simple piece was written in 2015 as a birthday present for the composer’s wife, poet and fellow bird lover Nanine Valen, and is a distant sequel to Canons and Chorale, which he wrote for her in 1969. The ornithological character is an affectionate tribute as well to his teacher Olivier Messiaen. The titular birds are a highly stylized chickadee and two song sparrows. Dur.: 4'30" |

Musiques Nocturnes
(Hommage à Bartók)
Piano Solo
Theodore Presser Company
140-40122 – Score – $9.99
See a page (JPG)
|
Written in honor of the Béla Bartók centennial, Musiques Nocturnes is inspired by one of his most characteristic and original works, the fourth piece (by the same title), from the suite Out of Doors. Both pieces feature overlapping “night musics” – atmospheric cluster figures, sharply contrasting motifs suggesting nocturnal bird, frog, or insect sounds, and an element of human, folksong-like melody as Levinson alludes to the authentic Hungarian folksong, “Tiszán innen, Dunán túl.” Dur.: 4'30" |

Suite française No. 3, BWV 814
Arranged by Jean Horreaux
Guitar Duo
Gérard Billaudot
564-03215 – Score and Parts – $18.99
See a page (JPG)
|
Horreaux points out that much of Baroque harpsichord music lays well on the fretboards of two guitars and has arranged Bach's Third French Suite as an example. He captures the polyphonics, the rhythms, the ornamentation, sharing equally between the two players for an authentic performance. For a duo of advanced guitarists. Dur.: 16'30" |

This Joyful Island
Guitar Solo
Edizioni Berben
564-03219 – Score – $10.99
See a page (JPG)
|
For the hugely talented young guitarist Aytahn Benavi, Gilardino has penned The Joyful Island, a rolling sound poem in A-B-A form. The piece uses the entire fretboard with repeated phrases and elements, pausing for an extended dynamic middle section with cadenza-like passages, before returning to the fast-paced joy of the beginning. |
Andrés Segovia
Fandango de la Madrugada
Edited by Scott Tennant
Guitar Solo
Edizionii Bèrben
564-03218 – Score – $10.99
See a page (JPG)
|
Scott Tennant was determined to record a number of Segovia's own compositions and arrangements and was fortunate to have the opportunity to do so on Segovia's own guitar. While compiling the repertoire for the project, he was presented with copies of manuscripts of a long-lost Fandango de la Madrugada with one "catch" - the original manuscript was in sad shape and, in part, unreadable. The second copy was a version that Segovia had made, perhaps trying to recreate his lost work. After considerable study and invention, Tennant has come up with a finished work which, as he says, "I believe he might have approved of." |

The Chinese Zodiac Suite is the culmination of a three-year project to honor the partnership of Old Dominion University with Minzu University of Beijing, a cooperative effort to bridge the cultures of both sides. In his new composition, Hailstork uses Western musical language to depict the 12 animal signs of the zodiac from Eastern folklore. The suite was performed by the Minzu University student orchestra at a meeting with the Board of Directors of the Confucius Institute at Old Dominion University (CIODU) in Beijing.
Executive director of the CIODU, Dr. Qiu Jin Hailstork, prefaced the performance with, “You can hear the sounds of rats scratching behind the walls; cows working hard in the fields; rabbits jumping up and down; a snake slithering through the grass; galloping horses and grazing sheep; a monkey swinging through the trees; the rooster, boss of the barnyard, crowing; the sleeping dog who wakes up and starts barking; and the poor pig, so sad because his life's only purpose is to be someone's dinner!” Dur.: 33'

Primosch discusses the journey behind The Flutist's Sketchbook on his website, describing the thoughts behind its construction. The goal was to create a set of short pieces for a flutist of intermediate skills, one that would also be satisfying for the more accomplished musician. The finished work has traces of its origin, but has become much more. While Primosch does not envision the set being performed as a whole, there is much contained within for study and performance opportunities.
