Alias Press
494-03088 – Score – $10.99

Flight of Fancy is an almost six-minute exposition for solo flute, using multiple techniques, such as tongue ram, flutter-tongue, beat-box, and singing, to punctuate and enhance the musical line. For the advanced flutist. |

Sonata for Flute and Piano
Flute and Piano
Alias Press
494-03100 – Score and Part – $22.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
The Sonata was a commission by the Texas Music Teachers Association, written in 2003. In this 20-minute work, the three movements were titled after the notes had been written, and Lias chose titles descriptive of the music: I. Wide Blue Run; II. Memory Dance; III. Kludge March. While the middle movement is somewhat introspective, the outer movements are full of the joy of music-making. For advanced performers. |

The Ghosts of Mesa Verde
Two Flutes
Alias Press
494-03090 – Score and Parts – $10.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
For his National Park Series, Lias was able to tour the unusual Mesa Verde location, ancient Pueblo indian structures that cannot fail to impress. Lias explains, “I recently had the added opportunity to tour the ruins in the dead of winter with deep snow on the ground and not another tourist in the park. Even under such circumstances, I couldn't escape the sensation that these abandoned structures are still alive with the echoes and memories of the Puebloan people that left so long ago. This composition, written in 2013, imagines a tentative descent into an ancient kiva where the past comes to life in a vibrant and exuberant dance, then evaporates suddenly as the fire sends smoke up the chimney and out into the night.” For advanced performers. |

The Six Souvenirs
Edited by Janet Schlein Somers and Paul Mack Somers
Two Flutes and Piano
Maurice River Press
494-03113 – Score and Parts – $44.00
See sample pages (PDF)
|
For the flute talents of John Wummer and Mildred Hunt Wummer, Bennett composed a set of six descriptive movements, each an homage to friends integral to the American flute scene of the day. Certainly, the names George Barrre, William Kincaid, and Verne Powell are well-known, but to Bennett they were richly colorful friends. The Six Souvenirs may be performed as a complete suite or individually. For advanced performers. |

Concertino in F for English Horn and Orchestra
Edited by Pedro Díaz
Piano Reduction by Mark Biggam
Historical Notes by Michael Finkelman
English Horn Solo Part and Piano Reduction
Theodore Presser Company
114-41725 – Score and Parts – $19.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Previously known only through a spurious edition in G Major, the authentic Concertino in F was recently discovered in Italy by Pedro Díaz, English Hornist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Díaz prepared this ground-breaking authentic edition through comparison of the multiple historical sources and an intimate knowledge of Donizetti’s works. The new edition in F Major is embellished with footnotes regarding sources and ornamentation. The piano reduction and orchestral score and parts (available on rental) were prepared by composer/oboist Mark Biggam in tandem with Díaz’s work, and the publication includes extensive historical notes by scholar Michael Finkelman. |

Clarinet Edition by Rob Patterson
Clarinet
Theodore Presser Company
414-41216 – Score – $29.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Advanced Clarinet Studies: The Art of Chunking presents the first and only method for clarinetists to master the process of “chunking” as a practice technique. Through exploration of technical studies, etudes, preludes, cadenzas, and orchestral excerpts, the clarinetist is introduced to basic and advanced chunking techniques to facilitate reading and tone development. Exercises for articulation, intonation, dynamics, and tone development are also integrated into the innovative curriculum.

This 14-minute work was co-commissioned by a consortium of 19 saxophone/piano duos. Matheson cites the irony that humans throughout time find new ways to connect with each other, while distancing themselves in other ways. We reach out across great distances and time, yet supplant the magical, physical presence of another living being. Contact is an exploration of this impulse to connect, and of the paradoxes inherent in our efforts to make the world smaller. Contact is lyrical then severe, gentle then brutal a microcosm of our interactions with others. For advanced performers Dur.: c. 13' |

|
Forever Alive, Forever Forward takes its title from Whitman's Song of the Open Road and features bold, driving rhythms and tight coordination within the Pierrot Ensemble scoring. |
For the ensemble Wild Shore New Music, Lias has adapted the third movement of his Range of Light, an extended work for alto saxophone and piano from his National Parks Series. Jeffrey Pine is now scored for Pierrot Ensemble and, as inspired by the Ansel Adams photo, reflects “an aching sense of stasis, patience, and sadness.” (Lias) For advanced performers. |

A new work commissioned by the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, The Quest is a reflection of the annual Yukon Quest dog sled race. The thrill at the start of the race, a driving slog, moments of calm, and the dash to the triumphant finish are all here in this nine-minute ensemble piece. |

Franz Joseph Clement
Variations on a Viennese Theme
Edited by Richard M. Long and Evelyn Moore
Violin and Guitar
Tuscany Publications
494-02697 – Score and Parts – $15.00
See a page (JPG)
|
Long points out that Clement's most notable claim to fame today is as dedicatee for the Beethoven Violin Concerto, Op. 61, but he was a prodigious talent from an early age and his performances on violin were highly lauded. Clement is credited with a large number of compositions, primarily for violin, including as many as 25 concertinos and 6 concerti. Although Vienna was experiencing a growing love of guitar at the time, this set of Variations is the only known work by Clement that features guitar, even if it acts as accompaniment only to the solo violin. Long works faithfully with the original 1819 publication, making only corrections of obvious errors, and the solo violin part has been edited by Evelyn Moore. Now rediscovered, Clement's set of seven Variations on a Viennese Theme can be a fresh challenge for this underserved pairing of instruments. |
Robert Russell Bennett
String Quartet (1956)
Two Violins, Viola, Cello
Maurice River Press
494-03115 – Score and Parts – $49.00
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Bennett's 1956 String Quartet was dedicated to Hugo Grunwald, who served as treasurer for many years of “The Bohemians,” an organization dedicated to service of musicians who had fallen on hard times. The work is comprised of three movements, the second a loving tribute to Grunwald's long service to musicians. The editors note that the source manuscript was an ozalid, a mirror image that was held up to a light source to read the music. |

Water Music
Two Violins, Viola, Cello
Maurice River Press
494-03082 – Score and Parts – $44.75
See sample pages (PDF)
|
A 1937 string quartet by a composer perhaps better known as arranger/orchestrator of some 300 Broadway and London productions, Water Music uses the folk tune Sailors' Hornpipe as a starting point. But, as the publisher points out, it “soon becomes a witty compendium of modernist techniques, though omitting 12-tone. Not very far into the piece, for example, Bennett puts each player in a different key. He fragments and reassembles the tune to dramatic effect well beyond what one would expect from an essentially trivial folk melody." For advanced performers. Dur.: c. 14' |

into the blue
Two Violins, Viola, Cello
Alias Press
494-03093 – Score and Parts – $37.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
From Lias' National Parks Series, Into the Blue is his musical distillation of the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site (Cornish, New Hampshire). Three movements describe the pastoral setting, several of the monuments, and the famous "Masque of Ours," a performance by the artist community to honor their patron. Commissioned by the Trustees of the Saint-Gaudens Memorial, Into the Blue was premiered in the Little Studio on site. |
|
Composed for violinist Baird Dodge, James Matheson’s Spin is a three-movement study in various meanings of the word spin. I. Gyre has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena. II. Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords in which snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. Similar to the first movement, III. Spiral explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales. |
Nicolò Paganini
Sonata con variazioni (M.S. 82)
Arranged by Adriano Sebastiani
Violin Solo with Viola, Cello, and Guitar
Tuscany Publications
494-02703 – Score and Part – $25.00
See a page (JPG)
|
Paganini (“the phenomenal violin virtuoso of all time,” says Sebastiani) was master of a number of instruments, not least the guitar. He often used the guitar in his vast number of chamber works, perhaps because of his lack of knowledge of piano, typically serving as accompaniment with arpeggi and chords. The present Sonata con variazioni, was written for the “only authentic pupil of Paganini,” Camillo Sivori, and was first performed in 1824. Copies of the manuscript survive, as it was intended to be performed for the 100th anniversary of Sivori's birth, but World War I intervened and the work was shelved once more. It is only now that this unpublished, unknown Paganini quartet has come to light, and it is here presented in a handsome Guitaromanie Edition by Tuscany. |

Described by Pann as “for the muscular pianist,” Fantasy-Inventions was commissioned through the University of Rochester for Pann’s former piano teacher Barry Snyder. There is a transcendental quality about the outer movements March and The Wheel, which are like grand gallop-fantasies. The middle piece, Passpied, is shorter and lighter, as an intermezzo for relief between the behemoths. |

Songs of a Sourdough (Five Songs)
Baritone Voice and Piano
Alias Press

Lias describes his Songs of a Sourdough as “a vibrant and emotional song cycle ([for those] sick of the Vaughan-Williams)… a manly five-movement set.” His exploration of life in the Yukon was written for baritone Scott LaGraff, who premiered and recorded the work. |

To benefit Chorus America, Stucky allowed himself to be auctioned off as a prize - the high bidder would receive a new work from the composer. After a few years and not really hearing anything, Stucky suddenly found himself up against a deadline. He reached back to a favorite poem by A.R. Ammons, Eyesight, which, he says, “Won't let…his reader rest till the very last word…one of those sudden insights that leave us breathless.” |

This is an original folksong from China. The Beaded Purse is an art produced in ancient China by daughters and women. It was a highly praised item. The composition weaves melodies in a beautiful fashion with lovely harmonies. The 1st trumpet's highest note is A. The 1st F Horn's highest note is G. That high range does not happen often, nor is it a constant test of endurance. |

Lias was fortunate to live for a week within the wilderness of Denali, a guest of the Denali Arts and Humanities Alliance. How humbling, how joyful an experience to explore this inspiring Alaskan landscape. Lias, says, "This rare opportunity to commune with nature, watch wildlife, hike the tundra, and be reminded of my own smallness was a deeply inspirational experience. The events and emotions of my time in Denali are given sound and form in this celebratory piece as it moves through exuberance, grace, danger, and grandeur." |

With a lone cello and four percussionists, Leisner considers the horror and waste of war - the few who lust for power, the millions who suffer and die. A requiem mass is played by instruments, followed by a gathering of armies, an all-out conflict, and the heart-rending lament of survivors. The percussionists use a wide variety of materials, from vibraphone and marimba to drums, tubular bells, chains, thunder sheet, anvil, whip, and more.

Robert Martin
While staying in Arden, West Virginia, Martin found himself thinking of other Forests of Arden, possibly in France, possibly in England, as mentioned in Shakespeare's As You Like It. Pondering earlier times of "bucolic delight," as he calls it, Martin has written this series of ten quartets, all featuring horns, the perfect vehicle for his imagined life.
