The poem, written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson, was set to music by his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, five years later, and was soon adopted as the Black American National Anthem. The powerful song of affirmation has been frequently sung at notable occasions, recently at the opening ceremonies of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Simpson-Curenton has arranged the piece with her own variations as a concert level entry for flute and piano. |

Using the beautiful Musetta’s Waltz from Puccini’s “La Bohème” as a jumping-off point, Daniel Dorff offers flute quartets an opportunity to swing like a big band from the jazz era. While the Bass Flute “drives the bus” like a string bass and rhythm section, the Piccolo, C Flute, and Alto Flute take turns playing lead, showcasing each player and the unique color of their instrument. Suitable for high school through professional quartets. |

494-03102 – Score and Part – $12.99

Lias has crafted a contemporary art song for tubists, taking full advantage of the sonority inherent in the deepest brass. A short piece, Vocalise is undemanding of technical skills, concentrating instead on dynamic elements. |

James Matheson’s Sonata for Violin and Piano was commissioned by Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music and premiered by violinist Tereza Stanislav and pianist Roberto Giordano in 2007. The sonata is an intense 15-minute work in one movement, dramatically juxtaposing recurring themes of great contrast, with expression marks such as “menacing,” “placid, clear,” and “forceful, with a hysterical edge” in counterpoint with each other. |
Chen Yi
Memory for Solo Cello

Theodore Presser Company
114-41859 – Score – $6.99
See a page (JPG)
|
Written originally for solo violin (114-41410), Chen Yi's memorial to a favorite teacher captures the depths of loss, the power of Memory. The piece was adapted for solo flute (114-41787) by Mary Holzhausen, and is now arranged for solo cello by the composer. |

Continuing a long history of fruitful collaborations between Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and the famed Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, the KLR celebrated their 40th anniversary by commissioning Zwilich for a 6th time. PAS DE TROIS is named for the ballet tradition after which it is modeled. In the 1st movement (Entre), the trio bounds onto the stage and engages in various interactions. The 2nd movement (Variata e Coda) gives each of the three a solo turn, followed by an ensemble conclusion. |

Psalm 23
SATB Chorus, a cappella
Alias Press
392-01217 – Octavo – $2.99

|
Described by Lias as "conservative, yet contemporary," Psalm 23 was written in 1999 for Dr. Perry White and the Monmouth College Chorale. The dynamic four-minute choral rises and falls in reflection of the familiar text, ending finally in a reverent whisper. Piano accompaniment is included for rehearsal purposes. |
Arthur Foote
Beloved, Let Us Love One Another
SATB Voices, Organ (optional a cappella)
Thorpe Music Publications
392-03107 – Octavo – $1.95

Thorpe brings a new print of a lovely choral response by an important figure in early American liturgy. Arthur Foote, who received the first master's degree in music ever to be granted by an American university, served for 32 years as choir director and organist of the First Church of Boston, and went on to become a founder of the American Guild of Organists and more. Among his many pieces for church services, Beloved, Let Us Love One Another is an example of a short response, accessible to congregations, choirs, and musicians. |
Henry Clough-Leighter
Thy Light Is Come
A Christmas or Epiphany Anthem
SATB Voices, Organ
Thorpe Music Publications
392-03109 – Octavo – $2.50
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Most choir members have probably known Clough-Leighter's name, from the hundreds of works he edited at Oliver Ditson Company (Boston) and then at E.C. Schirmer (as editor-in-chief for 35 years). But he also managed to compose hundreds of original songs, and works for choir, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. Thorpe notes that Thy Light is Come is among the last of his compositions. |

Thorpe includes a concise biography of John Wesley Work, III, third in a line of distinguished choir directors, musicians, and ethnomusicologists whose mission became the collection and preservation of slave songs and spirituals. Work, III became a leading expert on spirituals, while composing over 100 works of his own. Like his father before him, he became director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a group founded in 1871 to eventually perform "slave songs" all around the world, and You May Bury Me in the East was written during his years as director. |

114-41887 – Cello and Piano – $28.99
See sample pages (PDF)
Hailstork had originally written his Elegy in 1980, in memory of a friend's passing. Decades later, he was asked by cellist Tim Holly to finish the work, and the Caprice was added in 2016. Despite 35 years of intervening life and changes in musical language, Hailstork has matched the tonality of the earlier movement. His transcription for viola and piano was performed in October at New Music Norfolk (Hampton Roads) by Rebecca Sinclair Kim and Susan Ha.
