Double Espresso! was written as a gift to flutist Christina Jennings in 2017. It is a 2-minute encore piece flung forward at break-neck speed. True to the work’s title, the flutist zips through a multitude of unwinding ribbons in a frenzied, caffeinated state while the piano sizzles and crackles underneath. For advanced performers. Dur.: c.2' |
|
Giantess was commissioned by the Flute New Music Consortium for simultaneous “copremieres” by many consortium members in early March 2018. The composer has written, “The flute presents a far-reaching melody that seemingly never ends and explores the entire range of the instrument at all times. It is this quality of the melodic line that inspired the title of the work… the image of a larger-than-life gigantic performer who has the ability to make the flute expand in range, timbre, and volume, breaking the bounds well beyond its humble size. The phantasmagoric 9-minute work is cast in one rhapsodic movement. |
Tilmann Dehnhard
A String of Thoughts
Flute and Piano
Universal Edition
UE036747 – Score – $18.50
See a page (JPG)
|
A wonderful performance piece constructed around a constant pulsating A. Dehnhard, author of The New Flute (Universal Edition UE035320), casts his flute part in eerie, ethereal forms, using wind, singing, and open hole glissandi. Throughout the piano part, an A note appears in constant tempo, and scratching and dampening strings are used for effect. |

Klezmer Flute Duets
Two Flutes
Universal Edition
UE033044 – Score – $18.50
See a page (JPG)
|
Lösch adds five original works to a selection of traditional Klezmer tunes in an album for intermediate-level flutists. Klezmer Flute Duets is an excellent starting point to introduce this distinctive style - whether plaintive or joyful, Klezmer is a unique voice in world music. |
Pascal Proust
Prélu-duo et danse
Two Flutes
Gérard Billaudot Éditeur
524-08939 – Score and Parts – $9.99
See a page (JPG)
|
Proust has written a large body of music, much of it suitable for educational purposes. For flutists of intermediate skills, Proust has penned a short 3-minute recital piece in an A-B-A format. A melodic introduction gives way to an animated middle section, returning again to the opening thematic material. |

One Ann Arbor Morn
C Flute, Alto Flute, and Bass (or Contrabass) Flute
Falls House Press
FH0502 – Score and Parts – $24.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
One Ann Arbor Morn is a quaintly touching suite of scenes from the composer’s childhood, scored for the rich and rare trio instrumentation of C Flute, Alto Flute, and Bass (or Contrabass). I. Through the Arbor is a bucolic recollection of trees, parks, and rivers. II. Morningtide Promise begins with an Alto solo; it is a sunny weekend when life was simple. III. Agent McSquirrel and the New Feeder Caper is not only the scherzo suggested by its playful title, but a steamy flute trio tinged with the film noir jazz suggesting detectives investigating the latest burglary caper. Dur.: c.7' |
Jonathan D. Campbell

Falls House Press
FH0503 – Score and Parts – $24.99

|
Dakota Summer is a gem of Americana, charmingly portraying the landscape of a Midwestern summer afternoon. The 9-minute work for mixed flute quartet evokes moods, feelings, and imagery of a hot summer day, as well as the musical depictions of a Sunday prayer, a barn dance, and a silent cemetery. Dakota Summer is scored for 4 C Flutes, with the 1st doubling Piccolo, 3rd doubling Alto, and 4th doubling Bass. |

Angelus! is also available separately for standard flute choir ( FH0498). Dur.: 7'30" |

The Trumpets at Jericho
Two C Trumpets and Piano
Theodore Presser Company
114-41837 – Score and Parts – $19.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Dramatic and declaratory, The Trumpets at Jericho is a 5½-minute fantasy inspired by the famous biblical story, including captions in the music as the drama unfolds. The Israelites cross the Jordan River in pursuit of the conquest of Canaan, with Jericho as the first city in their path. They circled the city’s walls once a day for six days, led by blaring trumpets. The Trumpets at Jericho traces the Israelites’ activities on the seventh day, in which they circle the walls seven times, triumphantly bringing down the walls amidst trumpet blasts. The work ends with the trumpets paying tribute to Jericho’s dead. |

Cast in a formal mold inspired by the Bach partitas, Hailstork’s four-movement Suite for Solo Violin begins with a perky Prelude, followed by a March with a few subtle winks at music from the Prelude. The third movement is a beautiful Melody with slow-fast-slow form, and the Finale incorporates a few remembrances of the previous movements in building a dramatic drive to the finish. |

Happy Birthday Variations
Violin and Piano
Universal Edition
UE037117 – Score and Part – $15.95
See a page (JPG)
|
The familiar Happy Birthday tune undergoes an Igudesman concert transformation. Stated simply enough, the melody immediately morphs into a Viennese waltz, a big band statement, a Bulgarian step dance, a Russian romp, and more. A touch of violinistic virtuosity leads to the fantastic finish. Make someone's birthday special! |
Franz Schubert
Sonate für Arpeggione und Klavier, D.821
Version for violin and piano by Anton Diabelli
Edited from the sources by Christa Jost and Gerhart Darmstadt
Notes on Interpretation by Gerhart Darmstadt
Fingerings (piano) by Christa Jost

Vienna Urtext
UT050420 – Score and Part – $18.95

The enigma that is Schubert's arpeggione sonata - written for a “newly invented” instrument that would fairly disappear from public consciousness by the time the Sonata first saw publication. Written in 1824 for an instrument that came into being a year earlier, the Sonata would see its first edition in 1871. By then, the publisher assumed that the piece would thereafter be performed on cello, but editors Jost and Darmstadt have based their current edition upon the violin arrangement by Anton Diabelli, which pre-dated the first publication. Background notes describe the history of the work, and performance and critical notes address proper authentic performance. This edition for violin and piano is published concurrently with the edition for cello and piano (UT050402, below). |

Three Mysteries of Nagasaki
Violin and Percussion
Theodore Presser Company
114-41079 – Score and Part – $18.99
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Three Mysteries of Nagasaki was inspired by the eerie darkness and ambiguous bells of the oldest Western church in Japan. Dorff’s program note describes impressions of his visit to Nagasaki while withholding any explanation of the three movements. The 13-minute work is a duo for violin and one percussionist, with an array of pitched and unpitched ringing metallic instruments plus bass drum. |
Arcangelo Corelli
Sonates Nos. 4, 5, and 6

|
Corelli's Twelve Sonatas marked an historic turning point in music-making with its first publicaion in 1700. Originally for violin and basso continuo, the sonatas were divided into two schools: Sonata da chiesa and Sonata da camera. For their version for viola and realised continuo, the editors have used the first edition, together with the third edition for authentic ornamentation. |

It is argued that the arpeggione (think: bowed guitar) would have been left as a trivia question for historians had Schubert not written this particular Sonata. By the time this 1824 composition was first published in 1871, the arpeggione had already fallen out of favor and out of use. Even the first publication indicated the violoncello as the viable alternative solo. The editors have gone back to the autograph, which resides at the National Library of France, together with the contemporary arrangement for violin by Diabelli, in creating this critical edition. The history of the sonata and this edition, together with performance notes and critical commentary, are included. |
Diego Collatti (arranger)
Tango Passion
Two Cellos
Universal Edition
UE036731 – Score – $18.50
See a page (JPG)
|
Expanding his line of tango arrangements, Collatti brings seven tango masters, plus an original work, to cello duo. Some will be immediately recognizable, others are new “discoveries,” but all speak the language of Argentinian tango. The pieces are fully annotated by Colletti as a guide to performance. Enjoy the music that is alternatively “a sad thought that you dance” and “a way of striding.” Includes El choclo (Villoldo), Milonga del 900 (Gardel), Libertango (Piazzolla), and more. |
|
The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, Noir Vignettes consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette. String bass parts are provided both for standard orchestral tuning and for solo tuning. |
|
Lament was originally composed in 1999 for solo piano, in memory of Judith Arron, whose visionary goals for Carnegie Hall were matched by her abilities to achieve them. The performance challenges in Lament are musical rather than technical: finding and projecting the line from beginning to end; using rubato for expressive and formal purposes; shaping phrases; achieving variety of color; and employing these dimensions to create a spontaneous and personal rendering. Two piano parts are included to provide for solo tuning as well as concert pitch performance. |

Violin & Cello & More
Violin and Cello
Universal Edition
UE037119 – Score – $21.50
See a page (JPG)
|
Igudesman's previous collection Violin & Viola & More was very well received, but there's always that cello player out there who asks, "What about me?" So, fine, now we have Violin & Cello & More, which brings Igudesman's unique vision to the larger stringed instrument. Familiar music from around the world (Auld Lang Syne, Hava Nagila, La cucaracha, etc.) are enhanced with original works in specific styles. His Irish Stew in the Morning is so convincingly Irish, that some swear it's a natural folk melody. (Multiple recordings are already available on YouTube.) Violin & Cello & More is Igudesman's answer to all those cellists who are busily making their own transcriptions of these pieces. Relax! And have fun. |

Liebermann was commissioned by the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation for an exam piece to be played by each contestant at the Eighth New York International Piano Competition, which took place in June, 2016 at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. The First Prize Winner, Aristo Sham, also won the award for Best Performance of Commissioned Work, so it fell to him to give the first public performance of the work. "Mr. Liebermann, a fine pianist himself, writes some of the most idiomatic piano music today, so any contestant would be delighted to be assigned the Two Impromptus as a 'test piece.'” (Rorianne Schrade, New York Concert Review) |
|
Ragamalika (meaning “garland of ragas”) is a virtuosic practice in North Indian classical music, reflected most directly in the second of these pieces. The soloist departs from one principal raga (melodic mode) and whirls through a series of others. An influence of Balinese gamelan may be heard as well in the bell-like resonances and flowing textures of the first and fourth pieces, while the third, a study in opposed sonorities, is an homage to Debussy. The work was commissioned by pianist Marcantonio Barone, who has recorded Ragamalika on the Albany label. |

The opening of Stanley Moss’s poem unfurls the spirit captured in Zwilich’s musical setting for Bass Voice, Djembe (African drum), and Piano: “I salute a word, I stand up and give it my chair, because this one Zulu word, ubuntu, holds what English takes seven to say: ‘the essential dignity of every human being.’ I give my hand to ubuntu —” Zwilich’s six-minute work proudly declaims Moss’s message, using a djembe to add African-inspired color and punctuation to the musical whole. |

The Guitar Studies
25 Études de genre Opus 38 and 6 Studies from the Sor Method
New Critical Edition by Michael Macmeeken
Guitar Solo
Edition Chanterelle
ECH1402 – Score – $28.95
See a page (JPG)
|
Trust acclaimed editor Michael Macmeeken and Chanterelle to bring us the first critical edition of Coste's Guitar Studies and, as the editor points out, the first edition for 114 years to use the correct source. This should immediately become the preferred edition of the Coste Studies, complete with extensive notes and commentary. Exactingly prepared, this edition is suitable for guitarists with several years' study behind them and is intended for the six-string classical guitar. The score is performance ready, and the commentary and critical notes are informative, but in no way required, for learning these studies. |
Silvius Leopold Weiss
Suite in E Minor
Transcribed by Ansgar Krause
Guitar Solo
Edition Chanterelle
ECH0119 – Score – $11.95
See a page (JPG)
|
Silvius Leopold Weiss (1686–1750) is considered to be the most important lutenist of the Baroque. His works captivate the lute through their elegance and sublimity. The present work was originally in F minor. It is one of the few works of Weiss which when played on the guitar, retains its ease of playing and sound characteristics without having to resort to scordatura. Musically appealing and technically not too demanding, this work makes a most valuable addition to the guitar repertoire. |
Pedro Ximénez de Abril Tirado
100 Minuettos
Edited by Alexander-Sergei Ramrez
Guitar Solo
Edition Chanterelle
ECH2707 – Score – $33.95
See a page (JPG)
|
One of the most prolific and important composers of Peru, Abril Tirado and his minuets were certainly known to both Segovia and Sor, and Verdi may even have used some of his material in La Traviata. Hailed as "the Rossini of the Americas," Abril Tirado's output would include 40 symphonies, 48 masses, 226 songs, 50 waltzes for piano, and much more. Chanterelle presents the first modern publication of the 100 Minuets for guitar by the Peruvian master, edited by Peruvian-born performer and recording artist Alexander-Sergei Ramirez. "One of the greatest discoveries of classical guitar repertoire for several decades!" ORF [Austrian Radio] |
Béla Bartók
Für Kinder (For Children)
Arranged by Siegfried Steinkogler
Two Guitars
Universal Edition
UE037209 – Score – $21.50
See a page (JPG)
|
Bartók, a self-made expert in regional folk music, had composed For Children for piano and it became a seminal publication in piano pedagogy. Arranger Siegfried Steinkogler was exposed to a guitar transcription early in his own studies, but thought that its inherent difficulty removed it from its intended use as repertoire for young students. His arrangement for two guitars addresses that issue, and makes For Children once again accessible to young players. |
Niccolo Paganini
Sonata concertata
The Presti-Lagoya Collection, Volume 7
Arranged by Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya
Edited by Frédéric Zigante
Two Guitars
Edizioni Berben
564-03207 – Score – $59.99
|
The guitar duo of Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya enjoyed a 15-year career in performance and recording at the top of their craft. For The Presti-Lagoya Collection, Zigante has consulted the parts that they used, both in concert and in the recording studio, and the sources, to present score and parts for both guitars in handsome editions. The Paganini Sonata concertata, originally for violin and guitar, represents a more relaxed Paganini, playful and conversive. |
Franz Schubert
Sonata, D.821 (Arpeggione)
The Presti-Lagoya Collection, Volume 8
Arranged by Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya
Edited by Frédéric Zigante
Two Guitars
Edizioni Berben
564-03213 – Score – $70.99
|
The guitar duo of Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya enjoyed a 15-year career in performance and recording at the top of their craft. For The Presti-Lagoya Collection, Zigante has consulted the parts that they used, both in concert and in the recording studio, and the sources, to present score and parts for both guitars in handsome editions. Schubert's Sonata “Arpeggione” has been a challenge for arrangers and transcribers, ever since its original version for arpeggione (think: bowed guitar), an instrument which enjoyed only a brief period of popularity. The success that the Presti-Lagoya Duo had with this arrangement is testament to their arranging and performance skills. |

Leshnoff gained wide notariety with the premiere of Starburst by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (Marin Alsop conducting) in 2010. Some 20 orchestras have programmed the work since. And now the new version of Starburst for Symphonic Band was premiered by The United States Marine Band (Lt. Col. Jason Fettig, conductor) in Washington, DC on March 25, 2018.
“…unearths brilliantly unique colors through abstractly weaved lines. Instead of deriving color primarily through percussion, as often is the case with contemporary symphonic works, Leshnoff finds purpose in every note with the winds and strings creating inimitable microcosms.” -- Michael Lodico, IONARTS

Jean Sibelius
Concerto in D minor, Op. 47
Early version 1904, based on the edition Jean Sibelius Works
Violin and Orchestra
Robert Lienau Musikverlag
RL41190 – Study Score – $44.95
|
The first performance of the Violin Concerto was at the University of Helsinki in February 1904, with the composer conducting. The premiere was met with mixed reviews, with some criticism of the virtuoso passages (and the inability of the performing violinist to keep up), and even that there were “too many musical ideas.” Sibelius made substantive changes, deleting some of the virtuosic passages and modifying the orchestration, in primarily the first and third movements, and the second edition has been performed since. Given the amount of interest in the early version, Robert Lienau is pleased to now present a new score for the early version, based on the 1905 complete edition "Jean Sibelius' Works", edited by Timo Virtanen. The early version is longer and even more virtuosic than the revised version of 1905. Performance materials are available on rental.

Premiered by the Eastern Virginia Brass in April 2014 at the Virginia Arts Festival, Ghosts in Grey and Blue is a deep consideration of the cost of the Civil War 150 years before. Hornist Marlene Ford confessed, “Every time we went from the Fanfare movement to the Epilogue, I was tearful. I dont know why but I felt such sadness that I am glad my notes werent difficult so I could just sit with the feeling.” (John Campbell, Artsong Update)
