See a page (JPG)

Vienna Urtext continues their Urtext Primo series with Volume 6, presenting works by two well-known composers along with a selection from a third, perhaps lesser-known composer. Certainly, Clementi and Czerny should be familiar to any student of classical piano literature, but their contemporary Johann Baptist Cramer may be a new discovery. A solid selection of exemplary pieces will cover two years of study and all differ in musical and technical difficulty. Each Urtext Primo series volume is published in two versions: German and English text, or French and Spanish text.

The Somers continue their mission of bringing Bennett works to modern day with this fine edition of a piece originally written for the Sagul Trio in 1947. Each of the five movements is built upon an exotic scale - Balinese, Ancient Chinese, Ancient Greek Hypophrygian, etc. Each scale is simply stated at the beginning of the movement, followed by Bennett's improvisation.
Simpatici ricordi

Simpatici ricordi della “Traviata”

Arranged by Sandro Caldini
Fantaisie for Oboe and Piano

Gérard Billaudot
524-08984  –  Score and Part  –  $28.99
See a page (JPG)

Antonio Pasculli (1842-1924), hailed as "the Paganini of the oboe," had a fondness for transcribing operatic works for oboe and piano. His transcriptions often required virtuosic skills with copious use of scales, arpeggios, and trills, over and above an orchestral piano accompaniment. This fantasy on La Traviata is no exception!

Most feature a 16-measure theme, followed by two 16-measure variations. The final etudes are in contrary motion and/or retrograde.

Triptyque

Clarinet solo

Gérard Billaudot
524-08982  –  Score  –  $12.99
See a page (JPG)

A young 18-year-old composer full of promise wrote her first piece, Triptyque, for solo clarinet in 1978. Dedicated to, commissioned by, and premiered by clarinetist Serge Daval, the Triptyque would capture the attention of Jean-Marc Fessard, who recorded it on the CD Obsession. Three movements (Prelude, Incantation, and Dance) make up this challenging unaccompanied solo, an excellent first impression from a now-respected composer.

See a page (JPG)

For clarinet students approaching the mystical world of improvisation, let James Rae guide you in your first steps. First and foremost, listening to jazz is the finest teacher, and the included audio CD will help greatly. "Don't expect to produce a world class solo immediately. Everyone has to begin somewhere," he says, as he then introduces different rhythms and styles. Rae brings his incredible background in performing and teaching to bear in pieces in rock, swing, and jazz rhythms.

UE021743  –  Score and CD  –  $18.95

It is a testament to Rae's craft that he can compose a dozen pieces for beginning clarinetists and still evoke full descriptive representations of cities around the world. Each piece is immediately recognizable for its inspiration, whether Cairo, Paris, Moscow, or London. All pieces are written in the low register to accomodate beginners, while piano accompaniments will be comfortable for teachers. Each can be performed by soloist or duo, and the included audio CD includes both full recordings and play-along tracks. Audio samples of the pieces can be heard at UE's website.

As Light as Bird from Brier
(Fantasy after Mendelssohn)

Bb Soprano Saxophone and Piano

Theodore Presser Company
164-00295  –  Score and Part  –  $19.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Welcher’s fascinating work for soprano sax is both a refraction of Mendelssohn’s music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and his own incidental music to Shakespeare’s comedy. The work’s title, As Light as Bird from Brier, quotes from Oberon (King of the Fairies) invoking revelry at the play’s climactic wedding scene. Welcher’s fantasy skips among the most beloved themes of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer – giving the saxophonist quite a workout, and the listener a midsummer delight.

Two Soprano Saxophones

Theodore Presser Company
114-41919  –  Set of Performance Scores  –  $14.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Originally a saxophonist herself, Stacy Garrop has enriched the sax repertory with many chamber works that offer both daredevil excitement and an insider’s affinity for the instrument. Stubborn As Hell began life as a duet for clarinets; it has been adapted by the composer for saxophones, retaining its playful virtuosity, hence the title and premise of Stubborn As Hell. The “stubbornness” refers to performers incessantly battling each other around common pitches, informed by the composer’s sophisticated wit and sense of humor.

Ave Maria

Arranged by Sylvia Corinna Rosin
Alto Recorder and Piano

Universal Edition
UE037231  –  Score and Part  –  $12.50
See a page (JPG)

Of all of the composers who have set the Ave Maria text to music, two are singled out as the most famous examples: Gounod, based on Bach's C Major Prelude, and Schubert. Rosin's arrangements for alto recorder and piano are straightforward, and dynamic markings are at a minimum, in the belief that the music speaks well for itself. Additionally, the Schubert arrangement is also playable by tenor recorder.

10 Easy Compositions with Creative Performance Ideas

Violin and Piano

Universal Edition
UE037229  –  Score and Part  –  $18.95
See a page (JPG)

Performance artist and violinist extraordinaire, Igudesman has composed volumes of pieces about animals over the years. Continuing in this vein and with a desire to top all that had gone before, he has chosen ten creatures that actually exist, but that could easily be seen as pure fiction. Each of the resulting descriptive pieces includes performance suggestions to amuse and engage the audience, and Igudesman encourages experimentation. Humorous text and drawings for each of the creatures is supplied by harpist Magdalena Hoffmann.

So much of Mahler's great compositions center around vocal and symphonic music. As someone who is keenly aware that the violin most closely approximates the human voice, Batiashvili naturally conscripted select Mahler songs for her own instrument, bringing "new" Mahler repertoire to the violin. "Experience the emotional peaks of this irresistible music," she says. Includes Erinnerung, Frühlingsmorgen, Ging heut morgen übers Feld, Das irdische Leben, and Urlicht.

114-41828  –  Score and Part  –  $18.99

This tour de force consists of two movements that are complete opposites. Movement I, titled Momentum, starts with the viola and piano aggressively sharing a single note. Things start swirling out of control: the music gains greater and greater tension as the musicians turn and twist their way into ever smaller spirals, right up to the end of the movement. Movement II, titled Stasis, offers a peaceful, gentle unwinding of the pressure. Torque was commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for violist Viacheslav Dinerchtein.

Idealism, humanity, world peace, and altruism have been recurring themes and inspirations in many compositions by Eric Ewazen. In 2007, the Sejong Soloists commissioned this work for Cello and Strings to feature Paula Zahn as guest soloist – the celebrated telejournalist is an exceptional cellist, and a frequent and distinguished host for the concerts Sejong performs in New York City. The work was written for a gala concert honoring Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, and therefore the ultimate leader of international peacekeeping efforts. The resulting work, equally suitable for Cello and Piano, is appropriately titled A Poem of Hope.

Austin Wind Ensemble and was premiered by those forces under the baton of Fred J. Allen at the 2008 TMEA annual convention. A recording of the premiere performance can be heard at their website.

Commissioned for a consortium of high school and college bands in the north Dallas region, For the Mystic Harmony is a 10-minute inspirational work in homage to Norwood and Elizabeth Dixon, patrons of the Fort Worth Symphony and the Van Cliburn Competition. Welcher draws melodic flavor from five American hymns, spirituals, and folk tunes of the 19th century. The last of these sources to appear is the hymn tune For the Beauty of the Earth, whose third stanza is the quatrain: “For the joy of ear and eye, For the heart and mind’s delight, For the mystic harmony, Linking sense to sound and sight,” giving rise to the work’s title.

416-41515  –  Study Score  –  $60.00
See sample pages (PDF)

A chance meeting after the Philadelphia Orchestra's performance of Ranjbaran's piano Concerto led principal flutist Jeffrey Khaner to ask the composer why he didn't write a concerto for flute. Ranjbaran's response "Why not?" has resulted in a major new concerto for the flute, one already making its mark in the repertoire.
"Much of the music has a florid, sensuous feel, making consistent use of Middle Eastern scales and evocations of the ney, a Persian folk flute, Ranjbaran marries that to an all-out virtuoso cast for his soloist, which had the effect of making it sound turbocharged." -- Greg Stepanich, Palm Beach ArtsPaper
