For the first time, Weissenborn’s Method and both volumes of his Opus 8 Studies are presented in one spiral-bound book, revised and expanded by noted bassoonist and teacher Frank Morelli. This edition includes Ludwig Milde’s Scale and Chord Studies, a new and innovative Study Key, and additional lessons that introduce all notes beyond high Bb to high E. The book offers comprehensive, basic, and advanced pedagogical instruction from Julius Weissenborn as well as Frank Morelli through various studies, methods, and techniques. With thirty-six newly added duets based upon popular themes and many important orchestral bassoon solos, fingering charts, and a revised and expanded glossary, this is a truly complete landmark volume. |

Orchestral Souvenirs
By Neil Mueller
Two Trumpets
Balquhidder Music
BQ193 – Score – $32.95

A teacher and orchestral trumpeter, Mueller has an intimate acquaintance with orchestral repertoire for the trumpet. In Orchestral Souvenirs, he takes material for the trumpet from excerpts and longer passages, and fashions a second trumpet part from other material in the score or augmented with original writing. The result is a bit of fun, an opportunity to play and perform outside of the studio. |

Persichetti's third band work is a two-movement exposition in different styles. The opening statement in the horns underpins a slow chordal movement, in which phrases are passed among different groups of instruments. A snare drum announces the beginning of the second movement, a polytonal parade. An extensive essay on Pageant is available (PDF), written by David Goza, Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Arkansas. |

Peter Mennin was on the composition faculty at Juilliard for ten years, later returning to the school as its president for an unmatched 21 years. A lifetime composer with a sizable catalog of works which defy easy classification, Mennin wrote only one piece for concert band, the Canzona.
From the Program Notes ––
“Canzona is a short, brisk work, which opens with a declamatory idea expressed in massed sonorities. Next, a broad melodic line is introduced and supported by powerful rhythmic figurations. This is followed by a cantabile section. These materials are developed and expanded, and the piece closes with the opening statements brought back in a more dramatic presentation.”
