Ewazen Divinities at Dawn

Divinities at Dawn

from Celestial Dancers
Fantasie for Flute and Piano

Theodore Presser Company
114-41462  –  Score and Part  –  $14.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Listen on YouTubeDivinities at Dawn is inspired by the composer’s visit to the extraordinary temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which are covered with thousands of carvings. Seeing the gleaming images of Divinities in the early morning hours inspired Ewazen’s wind ensemble suite, Celestial Dancers. Divinities at Dawn is his flute and piano adaptation of the suite’s third movement. The music portrays the early morning hours as the sun creates a golden glow on the ornate carvings with music that is soft, quiet, and mysterious – but as the sun continues to rise and gleam, the music becomes energetic and full of life with the Divinities’ dance becoming joyous and intricate with swirling musical gestures rising to the heavens.

La Campanella

Arranged by Denis Bouriakov
Flute and Piano

Theodore Presser Company
114-41855  –  Score and Part  –  $19.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Composed as the rondo finale of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2, La Campanella quickly took on a life of its own, being quoted by other composers in their own works even during the composer’s lifetime. The title refers to a small bell motif that recurs in the accompaniment, in dialog with the soloist. Bouriakov’s transcription for flute and piano exquisitely captures the original sparkle, levity, and intensity, in a manner that is gratifying to perform and to hear. The present transcription was included on the repertoire list for the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition.

A 70th birthday present for his wife, Somers' Flute Sonata is a three-movement work in A-B-A fashion. The second movement, originally scored for bass flute, was recast for C flute to retain cohesion of the Sonata as a whole. (The middle movement has also been extracted as a solo for bass flute and piano, Dark Lake - 494-03140.) The finale ("allegro energetico") is a dynamic and punchy romp to a satisfying conclusion.

Dark Lake, the second movement of Somers' Flute Sonata is available in its original scoring for bass flute and piano. The composition of this tone poem was inspired in part by a passage from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
…the pent and darkened lake,
Cooled by the pendent mountain's shade,
Whose deeps, till beams of noonday break,
Afflicted moan, and latest hold
Even into May the iceberg cold…

Drapkin very well knows that a standard study regimen is essential to confident playing and recommends working through a set each and every day.

Drapkin details his step-by-step approach to creating the perfect reeds for his clarinet. The conversational text is amplified by photos that put you right in his workshop. All reed players should take the time to learn how to craft their own reeds. “Most clarinet players are slaves to whatever comes in the box, not realizing that just a few minutes of touch ups can make all of the difference,” says Drapkin, as he begins his process of creating the perfect reed. He discusses reed knives, various sandpapers, and how to “finish” a reed. When all is done, he even provides a troubleshooting guide for less-than-perfect reeds. This handy tome will bring you a skill that will last a lifetime.

Hot Spots was commissioned by Duo Del Sol, a married couple committed to expanding the repertoire for the ripe combination of English Horn and Bb Clarinet. Dorff’s inspiration came from the duo’s explanation of their name: “We like vacationing where it’s sunny!” That image and the group’s Spanish name led to a Caribbean influence throughout the work. The movement titles are I. Sunsplash, II. On the Beach, and III. The Bee and the Horseshoe Crab.

Manuel Hilleke, band leader/arranger/composer, presents Groove Trumpet in hopes of making that entry a bit easier. “My aim is to use simple song and groove forms to introduce players to the basics of pop and jazz trumpet, along with section playing, articulation and phrasing techniques, soloing and improvisation." Eleven intermediate-level pieces in various styles are annotated with tips and tricks, and the audio CD includes live recordings of the Marshall Cooper brass band for play-along. Experimentation and improvisation is encouraged. Groove Trumpet is especially helpful for classical musicians who want to cross over.

Duetti

Arrangement for Two Violas (originally for Two Violins)
Arranged by Annegret Mayer-Lindenberg

Universal Edition
UE036649  –  Score  –  $37.50
See a page (JPG)

When a violinist lamented on the dearth of violin duets, Berio instantly began the process of creating a series of short duos, each named in honor of a friend or fellow musician/composer. Over the years, this set of 34 Duetti took shape, spanning a range of skill levels. Many feature a simpler role for one player, usually with an emphasis on a particular skill or technique. In her excellent transcription for two violas, Mayer-Lindenberg points out that No. 20 uses playing techniques necessary for those preparing Berio's Sequenza VI for Viola Solo. Violists have long created their own arrangements of the original violin duos. Mayer-Lindenberg has now transcribed the complete set, retaining original keys where possible or transcribing down to accommodate the viola's range.

String Quintet or Ensemble

Universal Edition
UE037218  –  Score  –  $24.95

Tchaikovsky was moved to give back to repertoire for beginning pianists, much as Schubert had previously done with his Album for the Young. Even keeping with an undemanding approach, he managed to craft a series of pianistic gems. Arranger Peer Baierlein, noting that string ensembles still today do not have suitable pedagogical repertoire, has crafted string quintet versions of the Kinderalbum, retaining the original atmosphere as closely as possible. These arrangements will suit less skilled string ensembles as they grow. After all, as Baierlein points out, the string quintet is the "basis of every classical orchestra," so ensemble playing is especially important. The present edition is a string quintet score. Parts are available as a free download from the UE website.

Service left his upbringing in Scotland behind to sail to Western Canada to become a cowboy in the Yukon wilderness in 1894. Lias would spend years exploring our National Parks, with special affinity for Alaska. More than a century apart, these two talents would combine in Songs of a Sourdough.

Not New Issued, but available. The Nashville Symphony. The Violins of Hope. A commission of Leshnoff for a new orchestra work has led to the first recording of a performance on these historic instruments. By all accounts, a moving experience for musicians and audience alike. The Symphony No. 4 is now available in study score format. Read more about the Violins of Hope from Strings Magazine.

“The Nashville Symphony pulled out all the stops for the community-wide cultural event Violins of Hope, including the commission of a new symphony from the composer Jonathan Leshnoff. His Symphony No. 4 “Heichalot” represents a spiritual journey that has as its goal a communion with the divine. This sonic odyssey begins in the human realm, which Leshnoff depicts with music that is fast, dark and mysterious. Serene music signals a kind of heavenly arrival. For the performance, members of the first violin section played the Violins of Hope, instruments that had once belonged to Jewish musicians persecuted during the Holocaust. It gave listeners the sense of distant voices, unfairly silenced, finally being restored.” -- John Pitcher, Nashville Scene

Listen on YouTubeUniversal Edition presents the "last extended version" of Boulez' Dérive 2 in a 2006 revision. “When I reflected on some of Ligeti’s compositions,” wrote Boulez, “I felt the desire to dedicate myself to some almost theoretical research into periodicity in order to systematically examine its overlays, its shifts and its exchange.”

"I had the sense…that although the piece was 45 minutes long, it could either have been 20 minutes or 200 and it wouldn't really have mattered. All of the music you hear in it is based on a single chord (derived – see what I've done there? – from a musical transliteration of the initials of Paul Sacher's name). Everything changes on the surface – there are passages where everything is speeding along vertiginously, which then contract into pools of slower music – but nothing changes underneath. It's a musical world that's completely hermetic and yet infinitely expandable. Weird." -- (Tom Service on Classical Music, The Guardian)

Felder: "The overall title refers to spiritual pathways, connections among many identifiable nodal points, or regions, each one a continuity of experiencing, not an aim in itself. The first movement works with powers of concentration and fine attention; the second movement responds to an unfolding metaphoric, imagistic landscape as a consequent of the first movement and begins to develop rudimentary song from an intonation of specific scale points and formants—musical objects as things arise and disappear; and in the last movement, the linear becomes vertical in two chorales; The third movement's title refers to pillars of cloud and of fire. Each region has its own feel, but all of the individual phrases and materials are made of the same basic stuff." (Edge of the Center, June, 2016)

Overall, Krzywicki left me with the same feeling I get from Beethoven’s late quartets — the sense that you’re in direct contact with the composer’s state of mind.
