Sonatine, Op. 6

Piccolo and Piano

Gérard Billaudot
524-08989  –  Score and Part  –  $16.99
See a page (JPG)

Élise Bertrand, born in 2000, is already a talent to watch. Taking up the piano at age 5 and the violin at age 8, she has shown early on the ability to musically multitask, mastering both instruments. She began to compose at 11, and her Opus 2 (Impressions Liturgiques for Flute and Piano) was published by Billaudot when she was 17. The new Sonatine was written at the request of Pierre Dumail, flutist with the orchestra of the Opéra National de Paris, and consists of four brief movements.

Piccolodeon is a duet for piccolo and piano that expresses the mood and sonority of the “nickelodeon,” an early 20th-century arcade instrument used for silent movies, carousels, and vaudeville theatre. The piece begins as a playful ragtime with the instruments in sync. Gradually, the ensemble unravels to the point where it’s a toss-up as to which player is off. This musical gem is full of surprise and delight!

Listen on YouTubeFledgling is inspired by a family of Carolina wrens who built a nest above the composer’s door. This charming work for flute and piccolo depicts the pure and simple joys of a mother bird teaching her babies to fly and forage with the piccolo and flute chattering and soaring both separately and in tandem. Fledgling is a delight for musicians and bird-watchers alike, equally suitable for students and professionals.

Scored for four piccolos, it is a sure crowd-pleaser, whether in a printed program or as a surprise encore. Meyer’s arrangement provides unique consideration to all four players, rotating which parts carry the lead, counterpoint, and bass line. This charming piccolo quartet is appropriate for high school through professional levels.

Listen on YouTubeGary Schocker’s Three Dances for Two Flutes has long been a staple of the flute repertoire – in its original voicing with piano, as well as in transcriptions with string orchestra or band accompaniment, for alto saxophone duo with piano, and even in the composer’s flute quartet version of the famous Coffee Nerves movement. Schocker has arranged Three Dances for one solo flute with piano, incorporating all of the original work’s counterpoint, beauty, and spice, into this practical and concise instrumentation.

Fauré originally wrote his captivating Sicilienne for a production which unfortunately went bankrupt before ever the music was performed. Thankfully, he later arranged the orchestral setting as a solo for cello and piano and, concurrently, thought to include it in the incidental music for a play, Pelléas et Mélisande. The Sicilienne has seen arrangements for everything from panpipes to tuba over the years, and Thorne here crafts an excellent arrangement for flute quartet, effectively translating the usual piano or harp accompaniment to the wind instruments.

Martin Amlin’s new tour de force is a quintet composed for Leone Buyse. It is a study in textures and canonic gestures scored for 5 C Flutes, each doubling Piccolo. As with his rhythmic writing, Amlin’s movement titles are engagingly cryptic yet meaningful: I. Apparatus, II. Mirémi, III. Spiral Canon. Ideal for advanced and professional flutists, the work’s intricacies create an exhilarating ten minutes.

One of the important works likely to appear on any clarinetist's audition list is Tchaikovsky's hommage to his music idol, Mozart. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mozart's Don Giovanni, Tchaikovsky chose a number of the master's lesser-known pieces, wrapping them in his own signature arranging and orchestration. Clarinetist Charles Salinger has created his own transposition of the clarinet part for Clarinet in A, now an indispensible tool in the clarinetist's arsenal. Northeastern Music now makes this part readily available.

Something quite a bit different from the usual Christmas program fare, Bartók's collection of Romanian Christmas Carols springs from his lifelong fascination with folk music of the region. Bartók arranged several of these folk songs for the Christmas season into his original piano solos (UE005890), and van Zoelen has faithfully transcribed this into saxophone quartet. Series II presents ten folks tunes performed as a seamless whole. (Series I is available as UE037115.)

494-03156  –  Score and Parts  –  $8.99
See a page (JPG)

In the Carlsbad Caverns National Park system, Lechuguilla was known as a small historic site with little importance. It wasn't until 1986 that a group of cavers broke through to discover what would eventually become more than 136 miles of mapped passages and caverns, making this the fifth longest cave in the world. Several documentaries have witnessed the exploration of Lechuguilla, and access today is limited to approved scientific researchers, survey and exploration teams. Lias expresses the magnificence and mystery of Lechuguilla in a duo for wind (breath) instruments. This five-minute work for flute and clarinet explores the interrelationships between themes representing air, rock, and water. It combines traditional techniques with extended demands on the players including key clicks, air blown through instrument, harmonics, and pitch bending.

In 1962, the 33-year-old Robert Muczynski had already composed his flute sonata and other mature works, and recently had joined the faculty of University of Arizona, where he remained for the rest of his life. During that year, Muczynski held a Ford Foundation grant to bring his music to the public schools in the Tucson area. The charming-yet-profound result was a narrated work along the lines of Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling. Set in Arizona, Fuzzette is a hairless tarantula who assumes no one likes her for being different – until the handsome and charismatic Pancho falls in love with her for her individualism. Muczynski’s musical setting has all the charm, elegance, and jazz underpinnings of his best-loved works for flute and for saxophone. Listen on YouTubeThe depth and charming inventiveness of Harberg’s Suite can only be described as remarkable. Each movement has a degree of archaic inspiration (seen in the movement titles), newly stirred up into dramatic, exciting sounds and stories. Cantus begins with the imitative entries of Renaissance motets and maintains a modal flavor. Furlana plays on the Italian folk dance rhythm in 6, punctuated by lots of unexpected 5’s. Fantasia hints at being a lullaby with an animated middle section, and the closing Cabaletta is true to its 19th-century meaning of an ornate closing section following beautiful lyricism.

When Stacy Garrop first heard the Appalachian folk song Silver Dagger at a folk festival, the simplicity of the melody and its cautionary love tale enthralled her, leading to several years researching the song. She discovered dozens of variants of the song’s text, melody, and title. Garrop’s trio is inspired by two versions of the folk song, as well as motives from a third version — her exquisite setting of the folk tunes creates a fascinating 5-minute work. Silver Dagger is also available for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano (114-41798), and for Violin, Cello, and Piano (114-41406).

The present edition substitutes a clarinet for the violin part.

Christmas Confusion

Violin and Piano

Universal Edition
UE038029  –  Score and Part  –  $18.50
See a page (JPG)

In a true performance piece, Igudesman starts us off, appropriately, with Jingle Bells, but a Jingle Bells heard through his ears. This polite opening quickly morphs into an Igudesman-style Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, followed by other surprises of sacred and secular bent. His opening note, “Kind of Christmassy with a touch of Hannukah,” is apt, as his (recommended) sung “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”" leads directly into “I Have a Little Dreidel.” Timid violinists are advised to stick with the generic Silent Night (which, surprisingly, also makes an appearance here, along with Auld Lang Syne). True performers of advanced skills will want to work this oddity into their holiday program this year. Christmas Confusion is challenging for both players, but will delight audiences with surprising quotes from familiar materials.

Brooker postulates that music of Italy primarily brings to mind the vocal offerings of its centuries of compositions. He also maintains that Italy has given us unparalleled masterpieces in violin making. Combining these two not incompatible concepts, he brings a solid selection of eleven distinctly Italian songs to his violin and piano arrangements, which allow performers of intermediate and better skills to SING through their instruments. Every one of these songs is as familiar as pasta, from 'O sole mio and La donna è mobile to Funiculli, Funicula and Gné Gné. Brooker's collection of Italian Classics is suitable for events from concert stage to gatherings with friends and family.

With fingerings and notations, his score brings Webern's landmark work to an entirely new group of musicians.

This is ideal for the first concert. It builds confidence as they all play rhythmically together and the sound is full and rich. All chords of the diatonic scale are used so it does not sound like a nursery rhyme. The students are impressed with a full page of music, but for the director there are only two eight bar phrases to teach. Simple scales and arpeggios are incorporated into the song. The 1st trumpet's highest note is A. No clarinets cross the break.

Kids love to sound cool. At the Grade 1 level, though there are often jazz titles, seldom do they get to play real jazz harmonies. Larry McKenna is a master at composing a song that is very easy with great voice leadings using real jazz style chords. The flutes get to play trills in a couple of places. The melody is just very nice and easy to play. 1st trumpet's highest note is C. Clarinets do not cross the break.

This is the unofficial National Anthem of Australia. You hear it in movies, documentaries, and any time there is a mention of the land Down Under. It is a great song on its own, telling the story of the traveling migrant through the Outback. This is a very easy version that may be played along with the Grade 3 version by Randy Navarre (N300161). If you have an event to combine young musicians with a community or more advanced band, they may play together in this ideal composition. 1st trumpet's highest note is C. Only the 1st clarinets cross the break.

Here is a concert march designed to please an audience and help the director teach. It starts out with the Concert Eb scale being played down rather than up. It is easier to play in that direction. There are interesting harmonies with secondary chords, moving to the relative minor in the middle section. The clarinets do not cross the break. 1st trumpet's highest note is C.

A Kelpie is a Scottish mythical creature often seen in the shape of a horse. It is a shape shifter that can change forms. It is a legend often told to keep young children away from the lakes and rivers. The composition starts slowly in a minor key, moving to the middle section in major with a faster tempo and easy syncopation, returning to minor and the slower tempo. This is ideal for teaching students to learn to listen to each other and know when to bring out the melody. The 1st trumpet's highest note is F. The 1st and 2nd clarinets play above the break while the 3rd clarinets do not.

The title of this composition comes from the idea of having a very energetic composition with contrasting melodies. One can hear melodies, countermelodies, and rhythmic juxtapositions throughout this work. It is meant to be fun for both audience and musician. The contrast of dissonance to melodic and harmonic is the cornerstone of this composition. The 1st trumpet's highest note is F. Only the 1st and 2nd clarinets play above the break, the 3rd clarinets do not.

It can scream, it can cry, it can sing, it can dance and it can whisper.” The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia commissions a new work for each Spring, and in 2013 they chose to commission Jonathan Leshnoff. In turn, Leshnoff was able to work with the exciting international talent Nina Kotova for the premiere performance under the direction of Dirk Brossé at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

Premiered in October 2018 by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, principal tubist David Saltzman as soloist, the Concerto features three movements with a cadenza between the second and third. Adler likens the solo passages in the first movement and cadenza to a singing cantor, an obvious hommage to his own father's work in that role. Listen as Toledo Symphony Lab discusses the Concerto with Adler and tubist David Saltzman before the premiere. A perusal score is available at Issuu.
