The title Fanmi Imèn is Haitian Creole for Maya Angelou’s famous work, Human Family. Both the musical and literary poems acknowledge differences within mankind, either due to ethnicity, background, or geography, but Angelou’s refrain: “we are more alike, my friends, than we are unlike,” reaffirms our humanity as a reminder of unity. Coleman’s work draws inspiration from French flute music blending with an underlying pentatonicism found in Asian traditions, a caravan through Middle Eastern parts of the world merging with Flamenco, and an upbeat journey southward into Africa with the sounds of Kalimba (thumb piano). Fanmi Imèn was commissioned by the National Flute Association for its 2018 High School Soloist Competition. |

Commissioned by flutist Cindy Anne Broz in celebration of her granddaughter Elise, Dorff’s For Elise is a portrait of a delightful 3-year-old, as well as a recital piece in the slow-fast model of the French conservatory repertoire. The main body of the work is an exuberant 6/8 rondo, in which playful yet challenging episodes lead into a recurring jazz waltz. Dur.: 8' |

This gentle 5-minute memorial was commissioned by flutist Ray-Michael Kauffman in remembrance of his mother, who was very much a snow-loving angel. Its tender dialog is preceded by three rings on a triangle played by the flutist, and it concludes with three poignant triangle strokes played by the pianist (or heard from offstage). |

Gary Schocker’s Scrapbook, Volume 1 is the first in a new series of collected works by this remarkable composer. Volume I includes three pieces for Flute and Piano: Un petit merci is a thank you card for Paris-based American-born flutist Patricia Nagel; Palimpsest begins as a self-contained arabesque for solo flute, followed by a variation over-layered by piano; Wild Swan is a nostalgic ballade composed for jazz flutist Nika Rejto. |

The 7-minute work may be heard as a string of dance variations with intensity and texture flowing as the title suggests. Silver Strand was composed for Kathryn Scarbrough and Tereasa Payne who premiered the work at the 2016 NFA convention in San Diego, just a mile east of the Silver Strand Beachfront on Coronado Island. |

Scarbrough’s 7-minute quartet is a musical response to Galileo’s theory of heavenly motion, "Left to their own devices, things tend to move in circles." In light of Newton having proven Galileo incorrect, the composer has written, "…there is an element of irony in this title, which provides some insight into the music. It struck me as such a beautiful and lyrical thought, I couldn’t resist the impulse to spend a few minutes reflecting on it with notes and rhythms." …In Circles was premiered at the 2017 NFA Convention by Tereasa Payne, Kathryn Scarbrough, Ali Ryerson, and Chris Potter. |

An emigrant himself, Solare was born in Argentina in 1966 and relocated to Germany in 1993. Even so, his 2015 commission Auswandern still hearkens back to the music of Argentina, with overtones of the tango peeking through. The three movements are Expectations, Looking Back, and Integration. |

 The landscape for Forbidden Valley came to Offermans in a dream, which he originally captured in a setting for low flutes. After rearranging the piece for a more standard flute quintet, he has produced this score, which accomodates both versions. The included parts double where appropriate, Offermans makes use of special extended techniques throughout. |

Spirit was composed in memory of the renowned clarinetist Laura Flax. Laura commissioned Ran’s first solo clarinet work, For an Actor: Monologue for Clarinet (114-40236), to premiere with the Da Capo Chamber Players in 1978. Ran returned to the clarinet in many compositions over the years, sometimes as a lead instrument and at other times as an important voice, yet always inspired by Laura’s rich sound, blazing technique, and the "brain and guts" that she brought to her playing. As a memorial, Spirit is not about absence, but rather a celebration displaying a wide range of emotions, with at least a tiny glimpse of Laura’s brilliant spirit and spiritedness. Only in the work’s final stretch does the sense of parting and loss take over. |

The Maurice River is fed by drainage from the famous New Jersey Pine Barrens, is dammed to create Union Lake in Millville, and then ambles southward, gaining in size, to empty into the marshes of the Delaware Bay. Of its 50 miles, the lowest 10 are a navigable waterway. Somers was inspired to compose these six pieces, which depict both the small town life of South Jersey and the natural wonders of the river's variety. |

A commission by the Philadelphia Orchestra led to Leshnoff's Clarinet Concerto. Leshnoff likens the clarinet to Hebrew text, in that both are controlled through breath. The essential part of text is the vowels, whose dynamics are indicated by dots and lines (“nikkudim”) to bring them to life. Philadelphia's clarinetist Ricardo Morales, who also performed the new band transcription with "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, has said, “What I hope that the audience will hear is the essence of what it is to have fun playing the clarinet.” |
