Caritas Abundat
Caritas Abundat
(Great and Fiery Force)
By Michael John Trotta
SATB, a cappella (optional Hand Drum, Violin, Piano)

Carl Fischer Music
CM9615  –  Octavo  –  $3.00
See a page (JPG)
Also available for SSAA Voices (CM9563)

This SATB work, originally commissioned for women’s choir, is an energetic reimagining of timeless text and tune from the 12th century poet, composer, and philosopher Hildegard von Bingen. The marriage of the chant Caritas Abundat with a text taken from Liber Divinorum Operum (The Book of Divine Works) creates an entirely new work that expresses themes of empowerment. There is a reflective sense of the empowerment that comes from singing in a choir, especially the power of belonging to a group united for a purpose greater than oneself.

The inspirational text is Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale theologian Thomas Troeger. Somewhere I Have Never Traveled has potential for building tone and creating a panorama of colors, while at the same time creating emotional soundscapes, all through a delightful text that creates a dreamlike innocence.

Christ Be Born in Us
Christ, Be Born in Us
By Kyle Pederson
SATB and Piano

Carl Fischer Music
CM9619  –  Octavo  –  $2.25
See a page (JPG)

The text of the piece was inspired by a conviction that the deepest meanings of Advent/Christmas are alive and meaningful throughout the year. At the heart, the text is a prayer. Musically, the piece affords a great opportunity for each voice section to take turns sharing the melody. Though mostly homophonic, a countermelody is introduced first by the piano, and then reappears in the alto line midway through the piece, providing a nice contrast both texturally and lyrically. The piece builds to a dramatic climax in the final verse, and then scales back down for a contemplative finish. This piece works especially well in the season of Advent and Christmas, though it's themes resonate and would be appropriate throughout the church liturgical year.

By Michael John Trotta
Two-Part Treble Chorus (SA), Piano, and optional Flute

BriLee Music
BL1097  –  Octavo  –  $6.99

In response to the growing need for developmentally appropriate repertoire that facilitates the teaching of independent part singing, Missa Brevis was composed for emerging choirs seeking concert repertoire that will help to form a foundation of lifelong success as choral singers. Conservative vocal ranges, singable vocal lines and attention to the developing singer make this work a great choice for emerging choral ensembles. Whether performing as a set or individual movement, the work creates the opportunity to introduce new concepts such as meter, form, tonality, altered syllables, and fundamentals of good singing, while at the same time providing an introduction to larger scale works in the history of choral music, making this piece an attractive choice for choirs and audiences alike.

By Paul Lansky
Violin, Cello, and Piano

Carl Fischer Music
MXE112  –  Score and Parts  –  $32.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Angles for Piano Trio plays with a variety of textures and timbres that can be produced on the piano. Each of the four movements takes a different textural or procedural “angle.” The first movement, “With Pluck,” uses a lot of pizzicato in the strings, with virtually no use of the pedal in the piano. The second movement, “Take a Bow,” uses extensive double stops in the strings. The third movement, “About a Minute Waltz,” is percussive and rhythmic, and the last movement, “A Sad Song,” contrasts repetitions of a straightforward lyrical stanza with rhapsodic interludes.

Carl Fischer Music
BE24  –  Score and Parts  –  $50.00

Based on Wallace Stevens' poem “The Planet on the Table,” this string quartet's world is made of the music and sounds of remembered times or of something heard that composer Martin Bresnick liked. The quartet has five movements, each headed by a quotation from one of Stevens' poems as a point of departure or pathway into those remembered sounds and music. “What matters is that my music, like his [Stevens] poetry, should bear some lineament or character, some affluence, if only half perceived in the poverty of its sounds, of the planet of which it was part.”
