The piccolo repertory has been greatly expanded by Schocker’s prolific and elegant imagination, producing a rich variety of suites, unaccompanied works, chamber music, and now a fourth full sonata. Sonata No. 4 was composed for the Austrian flutist Florian Holzer, and its neo-classical feel is steered by the nuanced movement titles: Counting Chickens, Not Quite How Things Worked Out, and Cut to the Chase. Dur.: 10' |

Inspired in large part by the Grand Canyon of the American Southwest, Hoover envisioned an ancient time when natives first came across this geological wonder. For this vision, she sought to combine a Native flute with the modern silver flute, native music with “western” music, and bringing forth natural sounds through music notation.
From Hoover's notes: “In my mind's eye I saw a band of native ancestors searching for a home, finding a canyon and moving in. In the third movement their calls echo across the canyon. There is a celebration, and the piece ends with dusk settling in, with chirps and murmurs, bats, and memories.”

Matheus André Reichert
The Encore Solo
Edited by Jasmine Choi

Best known today for his Daily Exercises, Reichert (1830-1880) was a Belgian flute prodigy and early exponent of the Boehm System whose performances led him to tour worldwide. A trip to Brazil in 1859 resulted in his settling there, and Reichert is considered among the originators of the Brazilian genre that became choros. Jasmine Choi’s sparkling performances of The Encore Solo have now been captured in this new inspired edition sharing her magical artistry. Dur.: 2'30" |

New Jersey Campmeeting:
A Bloomfield Sabbath
Flute (doubling Piccolo) and Piano
Maurice River Press
494-03145 – Score and Parts – $26.00
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Somers has crafted this work with inspiration from two 19th century composers with New Jersey connections. The familiar hymn tunes of William Bradbury, often sung at camp meetings, can be heard above a “sound wash” not unlike that used by Charles Ives. The work was written for and premiered by the composer's wife, flutist Jan Somers. Dur.: 5'35" |
Franz Schubert
Hungarian March and Rondo
(Introduction and Hungarian Rondo)
Arranged by Michael Webster
Flute, Bb Clarinet, and Piano
Theodore Presser Company
114-41759 – Score and Part – $29.99

Schubert's time in Hungary brought forth several important works for piano, four hands. Of these, Webster focuses on the Divertissement à l’hongroise, D.818, a rather lengthy affair that can exceed half an hour to perform. The third movement does not lend itself to a setting for flute, clarinet, and piano, but Webster has faithfully transcribed the first two movements (in reverse order) as an excellent example of the influence of Hungarian music on Schubert's writing. The opening Hungarian March has all the stately bounce and elegance of a Schubert March Militaire, and the Rondo is a charmed inspiration from the Schubert who created many hundreds of the world’s most beautiful lieder and ornamental instrumental chamber works. |

Flute, Violin, Viola, Violoncello

UE038031 – Score – $24.95
UE038032 – Set of Parts – $37.50

Dvořák wrote his 12th String Quartet during his celebrated stay in the United States. It is a masterful blend of influences from both the new world and his Central European voice. Arranger Koncz has appropriated the first violin part for flute in this setting, allowing for more tonal possibilities between flute and strings. |
Lauren Bernofsky
Solitude
Bb (or A) Clarinet and Piano
Theodore Presser Company
144-40737 – Score and Part – $8.99
See a page (JPG)
|
Ethereal and meditative, Bernofsky’s Solitude is a 5-minute poem infused with both warmth and poetic desolation. Originally composed with the Bb clarinet in mind, this publication also includes an ossia part for A clarinet. Solitude has been recorded by clarinetist Jessica Lindsey on her Albany CD, “Set No Limits (Music by Women Composers).” |
Paul Mack Somers
Meditation on Jacob Wrestling
Clarinet in Bb, Viola, Piano
Maurice River Press
494-03144 – Score and Parts – $33.00
See sample pages (PDF)
|
On a mission to develop an example of minimalism, Somers found himself wandering into an imagining of a particular Biblical scene, that of Jacob wrestling with a stranger. This brought to mind a hymn tune adaptation by an old friend, which in turn became the underpinnings for Somers' own Meditation. The appropriate verses from the Book of Genesis are noted within the score as the tale unfolds. |
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Clarinet Concerto in A
Arranged and edited by Michael Drapkin
Solo Clarinet, Two Violins, Viola, Violoncello
Drapkin Music Publications
494-03160 – Score and Parts – $45.00
See sample pages (PDF)
|
Long an orchestral clarinetist and soloist, Drapkin knows well the major repertoire for his instrument. The Mozart Concerto is de rigueur for advancing clarinetists, although few are fortunate enough to perform with full orchestra. Drapkin's arrangement with string quartet expands performance opportunities while remaining faithful to the original. |

|
Extraordinary violinist, performance artist, and composer Igudesman has written eleven solo viola works for viola-playing friends. Each individualized piece reflects the dedicatee to an extent, but Igudesman's humor and virtuosity find their way through. These are demanding works, but are excellent program pieces and encore flourishes. Several of the pieces can be heard on YouTube, as performed by the artists for whom they were written. Finally, the viola is getting some respect! |

|
Written originally for the violin and piano duo of siblings Gil and Orli Shaham, the Yiddish Suite has been arranged for the trio of clarinet, viola, and piano on the joyful occasion of a wedding. The suite consists of five movements alternating fast-slow-fast-slow-fast: I. Schicker Tanz; II. Shalom Aleichem; III. Yiddishe Zach; IV. Der Rebbes Niggun; V. Der Rebbes Tanz. |
|
Commissioned by the Santa Rosa Symphony for Paul Silverthorne, principal violist of the London Symphony, the character of this grand three-movement work may best be described in the composer’s own words: “If I had to describe the character of each instrument in the orchestra, I would consider the viola to be the voice of wisdom, moderation, and prudence. However I find there is much flair and brilliance hidden beneath the surface. In my viola concerto I aimed to explore these contrasts: beauty and sweetness; agitation and angst; brilliance and virtuosity.” |

Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonatas, Volume 1
Edited by Peter Hauschild and Jochen Reutter
Piano Solo
Wiener Urtext
UT050427 – Score – $37.50
See a page (JPG)
|
Newly revised, the Wiener Urtext edition of Beethoven's piano sonatas is unique, in that it is based on a wide range of sources, including autographs, reviewed copies, and first editions, as well as early reprints published during the composer's lifetime and Haslinger's complete edition. This is especially important for those sonatas of which neither autographs nor copies exist. This performing edition contains a Critical Report in German and English, in which the complex source problems of these sonatas and the editorial decisions are explained in a comprehensible way. The best of the available urtexts.
Also available:
Piano Sonatas, Volume 2 – UT050428 – $37.50
Piano Sonatas, Volume 3 – UT050429 – $34.95 |

6 Moments musicaux
Edited by Ulrich Leisinger
Notes on interpretation by Robert D. Levin
Piano Solo
Wiener Urtext
UT050410 – Score – $12.50
See a page (JPG)

Did Schubert create the "piano miniature"? The charming Moments musicaux were written in the last year of his all-too-brief lifetime, and bridge classical and romantic eras. Wiener Urtext approaches these popular pieces with their attention to detail - includes the latest research, adds Notes on Interpretation by Robert Levin, engraved to exacting standards, and the layout is designed to be performer friendly. |
Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata, Op. 10, No. 1 (with WoO 52 & 53)
Edited by Peter Hauschild
Fingering by Gerhard Oppitz
Piano Solo
Wiener Urtext
UT050430 – Score – $9.95
See a page (JPG)
|
This popular Sonata prompted Beethoven to write two pieces as possible third movements before the finale. Ultimately, the composer decided to retain a three-movement form and the two additions were discarded. The present edition is the first to include a critical edition of the Sonata, together with the two abandoned pieces (WoO 52 & 53). The publisher notes, “This publication is not intended to be played as a sonata with 4 or even 5 movements. It could however, be considered as a suggestion for the conceptual design of a piano recital that features the original three movement version of the Sonata as well as the two piano pieces.” |

Ruth Crawford
Two Ricercare
on poems by H. T. Tsiang
(Sacco, Vanzetti and Chinaman, Laundryman)
Voice and Piano
Theodore Presser Company
141-40103 – Score – $14.99

|
Ruth Crawford was a pioneering subversive in both American music and socioeconomic politics. In 1932 she discovered H.T.Tsiang’s polemic poetry in The Daily Worker (a NYC-based Communist journal), and two poems leapt out as dramatically expressing oppression of the proletariat by the bourgeoisie, showing internal class struggle even within immigrant communities. This is the genesis of the songs “Sacco, Vanzetti” and “Chinaman, Laundryman.” Musically, Crawford’s rigorous modernism not only serialized pitches, but other elements as well. This explains the slightly surprising title Two Ricercare, a reference to the Renaissance precursor of fugue. |

"The symphony opens with a slow introduction that produces a great sense of anticipation that is released in the energetic movement that follows. The third movement—the centerpiece—is the longest, and after an eerie opening, becomes more hymnlike, with quotations from earlier religious music, including Gregorian Chant…before returning to its initial mysterious character…[T]his is a satisfying work with potentially broad appeal, demonstrating that there is still plenty meaningful to say within the symphonic genre." Commissioned by the Kansas City Symphony, the Symphony No. 3 notes the 100th anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I. "The work pulled the listener in with a force similar to what those young Americans of the 1910s may have felt as the United States entered the war, a lulling, quiet, distant beginning, then a sudden, clamorous, inexorable event and its inevitable upheaval." (Libby Hanssen, The Kansas City Star) Especially compelling is the third movement, which uses a baritone voice reading letters home from the young soldiers. Listen to the premiere recording by the Kansas City Symphony, Michael Stern conducting, on YouTube. |

Says Ewazen, "The work is scored for two combined ensembles — an 8-part low brass ensemble of trombones, euphoniums, and tubas, and an 8-part percussion ensemble of both mallet and non-pitched percussion instruments. The music contains rich, sonorous, and joyful gestures, with stentorian fanfares, resonant chords, and lyrical melodies. It was given a truly exciting and festive premiere in October 2006 by the combined low brass and percussion ensembles of the music department of Mars Hill." Dur.: c. 4½'
